Terminal Status Report for the Processing Refabrication Experiment (open access)

Terminal Status Report for the Processing Refabrication Experiment

Introduction: A low-capacity, low-decontamination plant can be built, as part of a power reactor complex, to avoid long distance transfer of fuel to a high-capacity aqueous processing plant. Activation of such a complex, with the processing plant adjacent to the reactor it serves, could decrease the cost of the integrated fuel cycle. The study of this concept is a major objective of the Processing Refabrication Experiment (PRE).

Lateral-control investigation at transonic speeds of differentially deflected horizontal-tail surfaces for a configuration having a 6-percent-thick 45 degree sweptback wing (open access)

Lateral-control investigation at transonic speeds of differentially deflected horizontal-tail surfaces for a configuration having a 6-percent-thick 45 degree sweptback wing

Report presenting an investigation in the 16-foot transonic tunnel to determine the lateral-control effectiveness of differentially deflected horizontal-tail surfaces mounted behind a 45 degree sweptback wing-fuselage combination. The effectiveness of the differentially deflected horizontal tail as a lateral-control device was found to be essentially independent of angle of attack and Mach number even in the transonic region. Results regarding the effects of differential deflection of horizontal-tail surfaces and effects of the vertical tail are provided.

Method of Matching Performance of Compressor Systems with that of Aircraft Power Sections (open access)

Method of Matching Performance of Compressor Systems with that of Aircraft Power Sections

"A method is developed of easily determining the performance of a compressor system relative to that of the power section for a given altitude. Because compressors, reciprocating engines, and turbines are essentially flow devices, the performance of each of these power-plant components is presented in terms of similar dimensionless ratios. The pressure and temperature changes resulting from restrictions of the charge-air flow and from heat transfer in the ducts connecting the components of the power plant are also expressed by the same dimensionless ratios and the losses are included in the performance of the compressor" (p. 119).
