Abstract: Cast and Wrought specimens and restrained wrought specimens of unalloyed uranium were irradiated in the Materials Testing Reactor, as the first in a series of experiments to develop fuel materials for sodium cooled reactors.

The following report analyzes equations of motion for somewhat idealized circulating-fuel reactor that have been previously discussed, specifically the assumptions that the instantaneous power density is constant along the length of the fuel tubes, that the excess radioactivity depends only upon the average fuel temperature, and that the fuel temperature at the inlet is kept constant.

From Abstract: "This paper gives a review of the concepts and operations involved in measuring the mass of an object. The importance of viewing measurement as a production process is emphasized and methods of evaluating process parameters are presented."

Abstract: (1) Grain growth in UO2 pellets was studies between 100 C and 2600 C. The pellets were encapsulated in small vacuum-tight tungsten containers in an argon atmosphere. (2) The grain size-time relationship could be expressed by an equation. A low exponent, m>_ 1/3, was found in those experiments and is related to the type of UO2 investigated. An activation energy of 65 kcal/mole was obtained for the grain growth process. The time exponent, m, increased with increasing temperature if the pellets were not contained in closed capsules bu heated under an argon pressure of 1.5 atm. (3) An interaction between tungsten and UO2 could be observed at a a temperature of 2600 C after prolonged heat treatment.

Quarterly report discussing progress on the Fast Ceramic Reactor Development Program, "an integrated analytical and experimental program directed toward the development of fast reactors employing ceramic fuels, with particular attention to mixed plutonium-uranium oxide" (p. 1).

Report presenting in-pile loop experiments DD, EE, FF, GG, L-412, L-413, and L-418, which were seven of a series designed to test the radiation corrosion of zirconium, titanium, and stainless steel alloys in solutions under various conditions of radiation intensity, temperature, solution composition, and velocity of flow. Steel specimens exposed in the loop cores showed increases in corrosive attack over that expected out-of-radiation.

"The theory of engine-cylinder cooling developed in a previous report was further substantiated by data obtained on a cylinder from a Wright R-1820-G engine. Equations are presented for the average head and barrel temperatures of this cylinder as functions of the engine and the cooling conditions. These equations are utilized to calculate the variation in cylinder temperature with altitude for level flight and climb" (p. 59).

From Summary: "A generalized analysis presents the effects of turbojet propulsion system development and fuel selection on ability of a strategic bomber to perform desired and minimum missions. The variation of bomber performance using a hydrocarbon, boron, or nuclear fuel is discussed. With chemical fuel, the effects of refueling are discussed. With nuclear fuel, the nuclear cruise-chemical dash bomber and the nuclear subsonic tug towing a chemically powered supersonic bomber are compared."

A procedure for calculating three-dimensional steady and nonsteady supersonic flows with the method of characteristics is developed and discussed. An approximate method is deduced from the characteristics method and shown to be of practical value at high supersonic speeds.

"Heat production resulting from the absorption of gamma ray photons in thermal shields and the leakage of neutrons and photons from ferritic thermal shields are investigated. The gamma rays considered arise from three types of reactor radiation -- thermal neutrons, fast neutrons, and core and reflector gammas. The energy spectra of the fast neutron leakage and absorption have been investigated in some detail because of the significant contribution of fast neutrons to the heating of the concrete biological shield."

Introduction. Some forty different uranium compounds have now been given diffraction study at Ames. Reports of these investigations are scattered in the Project literature; many have been reported in a sentence or two as a note along with chemical or metallographic reports. To make the results of this crystal structure work more available this summary of the Ames work has been compiled. (A similar summary has already been published from the Chicago laboratory.)

Abstract. The distribution coefficient of U(VI) between perchloric acid solutions and benzene solutions of TTA has been measured as a function of the acidity. It was possible to interpret the data in terms of the charge on the U(VI) species present in the aqueous phase. The experiments indicate that U(VI) exists as an ion charge +2 at acidities from 0.1M to 2.5M. In the interpretations of the distribution data, it was necessary to know the acidity coefficient of the uranyl chelate in the benzene solution. This was determined by measurement of the solubility of the compound UO2K2 - xH2). The activity coefficient of UO2K2 was found to decrease rapidly as the concentration of TTA in the benzene phase increased above 0.1M. This is probably due to the formation of a species involving more than two TTA molecules per U(VI)

American Mining Congress 9/24/58. Summary. Results of a recent underground test by the Atomic Energy Commission indicate possible applications of nuclear energy in mining and allied industries. The safety, feasibility and economy of nuclear detonations have been demonstrated and further considerations reveal a number of interesting situations which might lend themselves to the use of this new type of explosive. Possible applications include stripping, crushing, quarrying, and the exploitation of petroleum products, water resources, and low-grade ore deposits. The heat reservoir created by the explosion might be used to produce steam (and power) to promote the recovery of oil or tar. The mining industry can supply know-how and test sites for future tests.

The primary purpose of this writeup is to present a description of the electrical and mechanical features of the developed system for use in maintenance and operation of a simultaneous scaler control unit.
