The site, on the northeast corner of NW 23, and Rockwell, is being cleared for construction of a new supermarket, move opposed by residents of adjacent neighborhoods since 1974. The six-acre wooded tract, which has been a favorite park-type area for children and wildlife in the area for the past decade, is four blocks from one of a handful of heron rookeries or nesting places in the state. Last May, much to the ire of some residents who had opposed development of the shopping area, city councilmen approved final site plans on the tract to end controversy of the greenbelt area. "People in the area are pretty upset but from what I understand, nothing can be done now but hope that the bird sanctuary is not disturbed," Diane Jones, art teacher at nearby Western Oaks School, said....."The development is on a corner of the 60 acres where the birds have been nesting," Rice explained.
