Examples of the changes in temperature, pressure and flow following a reactor power surge (open access)

Examples of the changes in temperature, pressure and flow following a reactor power surge

While it is obvious that a power surge in a Hanford reactor will result in temperature increases of the fuel and water, it is also true that there will be changes in the coolant flow rate and the pressures in each process tube. In addition, if the power increase is of sufficient magnitude, a self-induced flow reduction will occur as a result of pressure changes due to boiling within the process tube. The relations between power, temperatures, flow and pressure following a power surge are difficult to calculate with precise accuracy. However, a knowledge of these relations is important for incorporation with physics considerations to allow prediction of maximum fuel temperatures following a power surge and to specify detection instrumentation for proper reactor control. Fairly precise information of temperatures, flow, and pressure in a single process tube following a power surge can be obtained using an electrically heated model in the 189-D heat transfer laboratory. Obtaining such information for all possible conditions and for all the Hanford reactors would be a fairly large job. However, two cases were run with an existing full scale electrically heated model of a single column of fuel elements in a C reactor overbore process …

Invention Report Process for Separation of Uranium Isotopes

A new concept for separation of the isotopes of uranium has been developed. The invention consists of a new process with essentially no moving parts. The new process is called the Ionized Vapor Process and is described in this report.

Proposal for charging GEH-10-43 NINI interim measurement test in the ETR

The objective of this test is to irradiate an NPR fuel element inner tube in the ETR 3 {times} 3 Loop. the NPR fuel element is a tube in tube type. Both tubes are Zircaloy-2 clad uranium metal. The inner tube is identified by the Hanford designation NINI. In GEH-10-43 we plan to measure an NINI tube after each cycle for four cycles. An NPR inner tube with slightly larger diameter has been run in the ETR Hanford 3 {times} 3 Loop. Two NINI elements are now running in the 3 {times} 3 Loop.

Flow loop defect-test behavior of NPR size coextruded fuel tubes (open access)

Flow loop defect-test behavior of NPR size coextruded fuel tubes

Ex-reactor high temperature, high pressure recirculating water loop defect-tests have been made on SPR size coextruded fuel tubes. The behavior in terms of fuel corrosion loss and fuel shape distortion for ``pin-hole`` type defects has been determined. Effects of annular spacing on the defect-test behavior and the influence on the mechanical and metallurgical conditions of adjacent components has been observed.

Production test IP-695-AC thorium oxide irradiation -- K Reactors (open access)

Production test IP-695-AC thorium oxide irradiation -- K Reactors

Irradiation of thorium for the production of ``clean`` U-233 at HAPO began in CY 1963. Several small-scale tests, involving from gram-size quantities up to a few elements, were successfully conducted; the results from these tests, coupled with theoretical predictions, indicated the desirability of further investigation. The objectives of this test are to (1) authorize the irradiation of about two tons of thorium oxide target elements in central zone process tubes of KE Reactor, (2) determine the reactivity effects of an enriched uranium-thorium oxide (E-Q) loading in the K Reactors, (3) demonstrate the feasibility of using the K Reactors in production of ``clean`` U-233, (4) provide sufficient irradiated thoria material to permit demonstration of the chemical processing capabilities, and (5) obtain data from an extended irradiation of one column of thoria elements.

Irradiation summary report: PT-IP-247-A-FP irradiation of 1.47% enriched self-supported I&E fuel elements in ribless process tubes (open access)

Irradiation summary report: PT-IP-247-A-FP irradiation of 1.47% enriched self-supported I&E fuel elements in ribless process tubes

The objective of this test was to irradiate self-supported fuel elements under conditions of severity comparable to those expected for future loadings of this geometry. From this irradiation an attempt was made to determine the resistance to corrosion of cooled cladding, the effect of supports on cladding corrosion and coolant flow patterns, resistance of ``hot-spot`` type of attack, and rupture resistance of projection fuel elements. These results are compared to rib supported control elements in a relative manner. To accomplish this comparison, four shortened columns of 1.47% enriched self-supported fuel were charged into B Reactor on 11-27-59, along with four columns of 1.47% enriched, current geometry fuel under authority of reference 1. As authorized, operating conditions were balanced as closely as possible within equipment and calculational limitations to minimize any ``built-in`` differences between the two materials being compared in order that exposure could be used as the basis for the rupture and corrosion comparisons.
