Effect of ground motion from nuclear excavation: interim canal studies (open access)

Effect of ground motion from nuclear excavation: interim canal studies

The effect of ground motion due to nuclear excavation of a sea-level canal at two alternative routes, 17A and 25E, are discussed from the aspects of motion prediction and structural response. The importance of the high-rise building problem is stressed because of its complexity. Several damage criteria are summarized for advance planning of excavation and operation. The 1964 shot schedule and the latest revised schedule are included for comparison.

A Study of the Defect Structure of Nonstoichiometric CeO2 (open access)

A Study of the Defect Structure of Nonstoichiometric CeO2

The electrical conductivity of arc cast specimens of Ce1+yOx have been measured as a function of temperature and oxygen pressure. These preliminary results indicate that although the absolute value of the conductivity for arc cast Ce1+yO2 specimens differs from the sintered specimens the temperature and oxygen pressure behavior is similar. The electron mobility in Ce1+yO2 was calculated from the electrical conductivity and thermodynamic data and the assumption that the atomic defects exist predominantly in only one state of ionization. The data for the calculations in the temperature range 800° - 1200°C was selected from the oxygen pressure region where according to the analysis of the conductivity data the predominant defects are electrons localized on normal cerium ions and quadruply ionized cerium interstitials. The calculated electron mobilities of sintered and arc cast Ce1+yO2 specimens increase exponentially with increasing temperature between 800° and 1200°C. Based on the temperature dependence of the mobility, the electron conduction mechanism appears to be a hopping type process with an activation energy of 0.14eV. The magnitude of the mobility is of the order of 10-2 cm2/v-sec. A galvanic cell using a commercially made calcium stabilized zirconia tube was used to measure the PO2 of analyzed and premixed …

THE MOUNTAIN IRON DIFFUSION PROGRAM: PHASE II SOUTH VANDENVERG: VOLUME 3 (open access)

THE MOUNTAIN IRON DIFFUSION PROGRAM: PHASE II SOUTH VANDENVERG: VOLUME 3

A series of field diffusion experiments conducted at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California are discussed. These tests were designed to provide the necessary data from which an empirical equation, derived by multiple regression analysis, has been developed. This equation is to be used as a range safety tool in support of missile activities on the Air Force Western Test Range at the Sudden Ranch Launch Complex, SLC-6. The field experiments utilized a fluorescent pigment, zinc sulfide, U. S. Radium Corporation designation No. 2210, as a tracer. Appro ximately 500 aspirated filters, located at 1. 5 m above the ground, were installed along concentric arcs at 500, 800 and 1000 m from the source, and along roadways at greater downwind distances. These samplers provided measurements of the downwind time-integrated distribution of the tracer. These data were supplemented by: ground and aerial air concentration sampling; and, meteorological data from several sites. Specific data are archived at the USAF Environmental Technical Applications Center.

An Experimental Test of Time-Reversal Invariance inthePhotodisintegration of the Deuteron (open access)

An Experimental Test of Time-Reversal Invariance inthePhotodisintegration of the Deuteron

We present data from a measurement of angular distributions of the reaction n + p {yields} {gamma} + d (1a) for neutrons with energies between 300 and 700 MeV. These data are compared with recent data for the inverse reaction {gamma} + d {yields} n + p (1b). Time-reversal invariance implies that apart from a normalization factor the angular distributions should be the same. We find an intriguing discrepancy in the vicinity of the well-known peak in the total cross section of reaction (1b) and apparent agreement elsewhere. The discrepancy occurs in the shape of the angular distributions and does not depend on the normalization of our data or those of the inverse reaction experiments.
