Ceramic microstructures and their elucidation by imaging, diffraction and spectroscopic methods

The development and potential utilization of ceramic materials is dependent on a systematic effort involving processing, characterization and appropriate property measurements. The methods of characterization are numerous and it is important to employ the one that is appropriate to the problem both in terms of its information content and the achievable level of resolution. With the incorporation of fine probe forming capabilities in a transmission electron microscope and the development of related diffraction, imaging and spectroscopic methods, it is now possible to obtain structural and chemical information from the same region of the sample at high spatial resolution. In this review, recent advances along with representative examples in the application of high resolution electron microscopy (HREM), convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED), low atomic number element microanalysis by x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), fine structures in electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and specific site occupancy determination by channeling experiments are discussed.

Management and organizational assessments: a review of selected organizations

This report is part of a larger project designed to assist the NRC in its responsibilities for assessing the management and organization of utilities applying for an operating license for a nuclear power plant. This report reviews the processes and criteria used by other organizations that conduct management and organization audits and evaluations. It was undertaken in order to provide data and a basis for future analysis by taking a comparative perspective. When considering changes in criteria and procedures as the NRC is doing, a standard benchmark is the performance of other organizations that are similarly situated. It was our goal to directly inform the NRC about the activities of other organizations so that a reconsideration of NRC activities could benefit from the perspective of organizations with a longer, broader, and different experience than the NRC has in the management and organization area. Data collected for this report has provided useful information in designing organization and administration guidelines and assessment procedures for consideration by the NRC.

The safety record at the tritium systems test assembly

This work addresses an important objective of the TSTA-demonstrating that the large tritium inventories required for fusion reactors can be routinely handled, without radiation exposure to operating personnel and without significant environemtnal releases. The techniques by which TSTA has achieved low releases and personnel exposures include high-integrity primary piping systems that exclude contact between tritium and organic materials, a secondary containment system that encloses all primary tritium piping in a controlled environment, an efficient, all-purpose tritium waste-treatment plant with 100% availability, and ultrasensitive, real-time diagnostics for anticipating and preventing releases, and for detection and location of tritium leaks in a low-risk mode. 5 refs., 11 figs., 2 tabs.

Western Gas Sands Project. Status report

The progress during December, 1977 of the major government sponsored endeavors undertaken to increase gas production from the low permeability gas sands of the western United States is summarized. The USGS is continuing geological and geophysical studies in the four major western basins to better characterize the resource base. Shipping arrangements for the core donated to the USGS by Inexco WASP (a well drilled for possible nuclear explosive stimulation in Wyoming) have been made, and cores for macrofossil and ostracode analysis from the Bowdoin Dome area have been collected. The National Laboratories, funded by DOE, are continuing their work in the area of research and development. The emphasis is on the development of new tools and instrumentation systems, rock mechanics, mathematical modeling and data analysis. Field tests and demonstrations active in the Uinta and Piceance Basins are Gas Producing Enterprises (GPE) Natural Buttes, Wells No. 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22; Mobil Research and Development, Well No. F-31-13G; and Rio Blanco Natural Gas Company, Well No. 498-4-1. Health physics aspects of nuclear radiations from deuterium beam injectors

Estimations are made for X-ray generation from the accelerator column of various neutral beam injectors. For the case of deuterium beam operation where 2.5-MeV D-D neutrons pose a serious health physics concern, neutron and tritium production rates from beam targets are calculated for different beam energies. Biological doses from these radiations and shielding requirements are discussed.

Analysis of release data obtained during High Burnup Fuel Test 10 (HBU-10) has been completed. In this test the fuel rod segment was ruptured by internal pressurization at 900/sup 0/C, at which time the temperature was rapidly increased to 1200/sup 0/C and maintained at this temperature for 10 min. Approximately 0.061% of the total cesium inventory in the rod segment was released; this was accompanied by the release of about 1.69% of the total /sup 85/Kr inventory. Moreover, about 0.022% of the fuel was ejected from the rod as particulates. The feasibility and conceptual design study for an experimental facility to verify fission product transport computational models has been completed. Although the study focused entirely on a facility which would be employed to verify those aspects of the transport models that dealt with fission product source-term attenuation factors in the primary coolant circuit external to the pressure vessel, the need for a second facility, to simulate conditions within the pressure vessel, was also indicated.

Silicon mass transfer in sodium loops and the resulting/thermal hydraulic effects. [LMFBR]

The element silicon in the surface of new, 300 series stainless steel has been shown to rapidly dissolve in sodium above 525/sup 0/C. It deposits in slightly cooler regions as a crystalline compound with sodium and oxygen. In tests, the deposits have caused increases in hydraulic friction factor (hence, increased pressure loss) of up to 300% at Reynolds Numbers of 14/sup 4/ to 10/sup 5/.Also, they have contributed to local losses of heat transfer rate to 1/10 the original value, at a Reynolds Number of approximately 10/sup 4/. The crystals quickly decompose when out of sodium. Measurements made with a sodium loop (volume = 0.42 m/sup 3/) include compound solubility vs temperature, loop conditions vs source rates and deposit transfer rates. Laboratory examinations and analyses of the crystals have also been made. The effects of this material have been observed also in a number of other loops. With the data from these studies, such effects are now explained and can be controlled or eliminated by system design and operation.

This document presents an implementation plan for completing the phase II portion of the Middle Fork and Upper Salmon River Habitat Improvement Agreement. Underseeding of spawning adult salmon and steelhead, high instream sediment levels, a lack of habitat diversity in the form of overhanging riparian vegetation and edge, and barriers to both adult and juvenile anadromous fish migration were identified as the principal factors limiting anadromous fish production in the project area. Underseeding is being addressed in other projects sponsored and funded by the Bonneville Power Administration while this implementation plan lays out a schedule for resolving the other identified limiting factors. The primary goal of this program is to increase the quality and quantity of anadromous fish habitat (spring chinook and summer steelhead) with an emphasis on the survival of the wild stocks. This goal will be achieved by reducing the impact of sediment loading, improving riparian vegetation, eliminating passage barriers, and increasing habitat diversity. Meeting the above goal will provide off-site mitigation under the manadate of the pacific northwest electric power planning and conservation act of 1980. CHILES 2: a finite element computer program that calculates the intensities of linear elastic singularities in isotropic and orthotropic materials

CHILES 2 is a finite-element computer program that calculates the strength of singularities in linear elastic bodies. A generalized quadrilateral finite element that includes a singular point at a corner node is incorporated in the code. The displacement formulation is used and interelement compatibility is maintained so that monotone convergence is preserved. Plane stress, plane strain, and axisymmetric conditions are treated. Isotropic and orthotropic crack tip singularity problems are solved by this version of the code, but any type of singularity may be properly modeled by modifying selected subroutines in the program.

Diagnosing vegetation injury caused by air pollution

The structure and function of plants in relation to air pollution injury is discussed. The sources, atmospheric chemistry, monitoring data, symptomatology, factors affecting plant response, injury threshold doses, air quality standards, relative sensitivity of plants, and leaf tissue analysis are discussed for major air pollutants. Among the pollutants discussed are: the photochemical oxidants (ozone, PAN, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and fluorides). Minor pollutants discussed in the same framework are chlorine, hydrogen chloride, ethylene, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, heavy metals (lead, zinc, cadmium, copper, and mercury), particulates, and pesticides. A study of steady-state steam-water counterflow in porous media

Vapor-liquid counterflow in porous media arises in processes such as heat pipes, oil recovery and geothermal systems. Previous studies analysed these phenomena in separate contexts. This paper presents a unified description from which previous models result as limiting cases. The analysis includes capillarity, heat conduction, and Kelvin effects. The importance of each term to various processes is examined. Significantly, it is found that the critical heat flux is not constant but increases with decreasing permeability. A threshold permeability is identified below which steady states may not exist. Analogous conclusions are reached regarding liquid-dominated geothermal systems. 24 refs., 15 figs.

The gamma-ray bump observed between 0.5 and 2 MeV in the spectrum of Cygnus X-1 can be interpreted as the thermal emissions from a hot (kT)approximately)400 keV) pair-dominated cloud. We argue that the X-rays and gamma rays are produced in separate emission regions, and calculate the photon-photon pair production rate from X-ray and gamma-ray interactions in the vicinity of Cyg X-1 by employing a simplified geometry for the two emitting regions.

Anion exchange of 58 elements in hydrobromic acid and in hydriodic acid

Anion exchange distributions of 58 elements have been measured from 0.1-8.7M HBr and from 0.1-7.4M HI onto three strong-base resins, 8 and 4% cross-linked and macroporous. Data were obtained by 16- to 18-h dynamic batch contacts. Anion exchange in these media is compared to that in HCl. The effect of resin cross-linkage is considerably greater in HI media than in HBr and HCl media. Examples are presented of potentially useful separations using HBr and HI media alone and in combination with HCl.

Describe the management program for coordinating subcontractors and their work, and integrating research results. Appropriate flowcharts should be included. Provide more information on the overall scope of the program. For each subcontractor, provide specific workscopes that indicate whether analytical activities are developmental or routine, approximate number of analyses to be made, and something of the adequacy of the analyses to meet program goals. Indicate interfaces with other earth-science disciplines like hydrology and with other groups doing relevant geochemical research and engineering design. Address the priorities for each activity or group of activities. High priority should be given to early development of a geochemical statement of what constitutes suitable salt for a repository. Reference standard procedures for sampling, sample preservation, and sample analysis wherever appropriate or, if not appropriate, indicate that any deviations from standard procedures will be documented. The distorted-wave theory of direct nuclear reactions is presented in a unified manner, in which the effects of assuming various reaction mechanisms and nuclear models appear only in certain radial form factors. The zero-range approximation is used, and spin-orbit coupling is neglected in the distorted waves. Formulas are given for transition amplitudes, cross sections, and polarizations.
