Ultrasonic Assembly of Thermoplastic Parts (open access)

Ultrasonic Assembly of Thermoplastic Parts

Four ultrasonic methods were evaluated for assembly of experimental plastic parts for detonators: (1) welding, (2) crimping and staking, (3) insertion, and (4) reactivation of adhesives. For welding, staking and insertion, plastics with low elastic moduli, such as acrylics and polycarbonate, produced the best results. Thermosetting, hot-melt, and solution adhesives could all be activated ultrasonically to form good bonds on plastics and other materials. This evaluation indicated that thermoplastic detonator parts could be assembled ultrasonically in shorter times than by present production techniques with high bond strengths and high product acceptance rates.

SOD1 UM FIRE ACCIDENTS IN REACTOR COtdTAI NMENT VOLUME: A SUMMARY OF PARAMETR-I C STUDIES (open access)

SOD1 UM FIRE ACCIDENTS IN REACTOR COtdTAI NMENT VOLUME: A SUMMARY OF PARAMETR-I C STUDIES

Atmospheric pressure and temperature excursions at constant volume for oxidation of high temperature sodium are investigated analytically. Data under both the adiabatic condition and the time dependent transient heat transfer condition are reported. The analyses represent parametric cases involving variations in containment geometry, variations in sodium conditions, and variations in contained gas conditions including oxygen concentrations of 0 to 21 vol%. The objective is to obtain data for design of containment for the Fast Flux Test Facility. Design of containment requires a knowledge of maximum temperatures and pressures to be expected as a consequence of the unlikely occurrence of a high volume sodium leak. This information is presented in graphical and tabular form.

THE MEASUREMENT OF RADIATION EXPOSURE OF ASTRONAUTS BY RADIOCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES October 6,1969 Through January 4, 1970

The urine and feces specimens from the Apollo 11 mission were analyzed for their radionuclide content. Estimates of cosmic radiation dose received by the astronauts were difficult to determine due to decay of the short-lived radionuclides during quarantine. The concentrations of {sup 7}Be, {sup 22}Na, {sup 40}K, {sup 59}Fe, {sup 60}Co, and {sup 137}Cs were determined. No {sup 147}Pm was observed in any of the samples. The concentrations of 16 major, minor, and trace elements were determined in fecal samples from Apollos 8 and 10. Large discrepancies between the excretion rates and normal dietary intakes were noted for cobalt, iron, tin , and potassium. An interpretation of the hazards these deviations may produce requires the determination of the elemental concentrations of the foodstuffs used during these missions. The fecal samples from the Apollo 11 mission were analyzed for glass fiber content. One anomalous sample was observed having a glass fiber content twofold greater than any previously measured specimen. A piece of the outer thermal coating of the Apollo 12 spacecraft was analyzed for cosmic-ray-induced radioactivity. Beryllium-7 was observed .

A proposal to measure polarization in pp, pi- p and pi+ p elastic scattering at 50, 100, and 150 GeV/c at the National Accelerator Laboratory (open access)

A proposal to measure polarization in pp, pi- p and pi+ p elastic scattering at 50, 100, and 150 GeV/c at the National Accelerator Laboratory

The authors propose to measure the polarization parameter in pp, {pi}{sup -}p, and {pi}{sup +}p scattering at incident momenta of 50, 100, and 150 GeV/c over the range 0.15 {le} -t {le} 1.5 (GeV/c){sup 2}. The apparatus consists of a polarized proton target, two spectrometer arms which determine the angles and momenta of both outgoing particles, and an on-line computer. The detectors are designed to operate at incident beam rates of up to 10{sup 8} beam particles/pulse. They anticipate an error in the polarization parameter P of .005 {le} {Delta}P {le} .01 over the range .15 {le} -t {le} .8 (GeV/c){sup 2} in 100 shifts of data taking and background studies.

Search for baryon resonances up to 10 GeV mass produced in p+p->+mm with a resolution of +- 25 MeV (open access)

Search for baryon resonances up to 10 GeV mass produced in p+p->+mm with a resolution of +- 25 MeV

A simple magnet-less missiong-mass experiment is proposed to investigate the mass-spectrum of non-strange baryons of isospins 1/2 and 3/2 in the mass-range from 4 to 10GeV with a resolution of {+-}25 MeV or better. The spacing between baryons expected from the empirical interval rule {Delta}M{sup 2} = 1 BeV{sup 2} is 125 and 50 MeV for masses of 4 and 10 GeV respectively; if the rule holds, one expects 10{sup 2}-4{sup 2} = 84 resonances in this range. They plan to use the reaction p + p - p + MM and to detect the recoil protons in the region of the Jacobian peak. The protons of momenta from 400 to 850 MeV/c are selected by means of time-of-flight, range, and pulse height and are recorded in a pulse height analyzer. Since no magnets, wire planes, computers or any other major facilities are needed, the experiment can be done as soon as the beam, either full extracted (Option 1) or secondary diffracted (Option 2) or interla (Option 3) is available.

Study of low-mass peripheral states in a small triggered bubble chamber (open access)

Study of low-mass peripheral states in a small triggered bubble chamber

The authors propose to study {approx} 40,000 events of the type beam particle + proton {yields} M + beam particle where M is a fairly low mass (2-5 GeV) state which is peripherally produced and slow in the lab. The decay products of M would be studied in detail as a function of M at two different beam momenta. The choice of beam particle and the two beam momenta would depend on what was technically most feasible, but at least the beam momenta should be greater than 100 GeV/c. A hydrogen bubble changer, pulsing several times per machine cycle, would be triggered on a fast forward particle near the beam momentum. The invariant mass M would be calculated for each event by momentum analysis of this particle. The experiment requires a beam with a momentum resolution {Delta}p/p of .002 or better and an emittance of .1 mm - mrad.

Elastic scattering of the long-lived hadrons (open access)

Elastic scattering of the long-lived hadrons

The authors propose to measure the elastic scattering of the charged hadrons {pi}{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, p and {bar p} over a region of momentum transfer up to about 1 GeV/c. Special attention will be given to the Coulomb interference region. This experimental program is based on the use of novel detectors of high spatial resolution which we have developed.

Inclusive pion - proton scattering

The reactions {pi}+ p {yields} {pi}+ {hor_ellipsis} and {pi}+ p {yields} K+ {hor_ellipsis} will be studied over a wide range of the Feynman variables X, Q and S in order to test the conjectured scaling law for hadron collisions and study the form of the yield distributions. Particular attention will be paid to the vicinity of X = 0. The experiment will be carried out with a simple one-magnet spectrometer which takes full advantage of the kinematics and has wide acceptance and the capability of high precision.
