Out-of-Pile Properties of Mixed Uranium-Plutonium Carbides. Final Report
Fabrication studies to produce high density solid solutions of 80% UC-- 20% PuC, with reproducible structure, composition, and density, were completed. Solid solution (U,Pu)C powder was produced by the oxide-carbon reaction, and the powders were consolidated by cold pressing and sintering. The studies were a continuation of work performed on Contract AT(30-1)-2899 with the USAEC. Two types of material were produced: 1. (U/sub 0.8/Pu/sub 0.2/)C/sub 0.95/, single,phase monocarbide pellets with average densities of 12.8 g/cm/sup 3/ (94% of theoretical), sintered at 1925 deg C; 2. (U/subn 0.95/ at 0.1 wt% Ni sintering aid, major monocarbide phase and minor amount of sesquicarbide phase pellets, with average densities of 13.1 g/cm/sup 3/ (96.5% of theoretical), sintered at 1550 deg C. The coefficient of thermal expansion was measured as 11.9 x 10/sup -6/ / deg C for (U/sub 0.8/Pu/sub 0.2/) x C/sub 0.95/ at 25 to 1400 deg C and 12.3 x 10/sup -6// deg C for (U/sub 0.8/Pu/sub 0 .2/)C/sub 0.95/ 0.1 wt% Ni at 25 to 1400 deg C. The presence of the nickel sintering aid did not make a significant difference. the values are similar to those of UC, compared at 950 deg C, the maximum temperature to which UC …

The Sandia APAR-3G system: Automatic Programming, Recording, and Control for Development and Production Testing
Abstract: The APAR-3G system is an automatic programming, controlling and recording machine which is readily adaptable to a wide variety of automated data acquisition and constrol system applications. It is physically and logically modular to permit the assemby of minimum or maximum capability machines. This system can perform the necessary acquisition and control in a typical factory environment and can generate an output (for data reduction) which is compatible with available computer systems.

Control Actuator Component Test 14/W001 Torquemotor Test
A permanent magnet torquemotor is used to covert the conditioned error signal from the actuator amplifier into a force capable of driving a servo-valve. In order for the results to be comparable to actuator conditions, the effort was made to duplicate the actual driving (input) and loading (output) parameters. The results of this screening test showed performance which was good, but left some doubt as to the exact nature of the 10 to 20% variation seen in both static and dynamic characteristics. Since the percent variation, if really due to irradiation or a combined effect, could materially affect the actuator performance it is necessary tha a more sensitive test be performed. Such a test should be in an environment which poses fewer testing problem than a cryogenic test,and is therefore, easier to control. Plans are in progress for such a test.

This report covers the development and qualifications of a brazing process capable of forming the bond between the instrument leads and the seal block. The process developed is unusal in that it permits the formation of a bond between austenitic stainless steel surfaces at the temperatures below 1350°F without a flux.

The operation of LAMPRE I is summarized. The results of the examination of a defective fuel capsule and the Na coolant are given. The status of the core calculation program for the transport-theory description of core characteristics is described. The preparation of Pu-- Co-- Ce alloys is reported. The reactions of molten Co-- Ce alloys with Ta are studied. Intergranular attack was observed in the exposure of TaC, NbC, and ZrC crucibles to U--Mn alloy at 1100 deg C. Data are given on the zeta phase, monocarbide, and sesquicarbide in the Pu-- C phase diagrams, and on the other Pu systems: Pu--C--N, Pu--C--O, Pu-In, Pu-- N, and Pu-- rare earth. The status of the Core Test Facility (Phase A and B) is outiined. (D.L.C.)
