Distribution of excess temperature from the Morgantown Generating Station on the Potomac Estuary (open access)

Distribution of excess temperature from the Morgantown Generating Station on the Potomac Estuary

Research undertaken to determine the effects of thermal effluents on the temperature distribution in estuarine waters is described. Procedures for and results from measurements of the temperature, river flow, tidal currents, salinity, wind, etc at the Potomac River estuary in 1969 and 1972, which represent pre- and post-operation conditions for the operation of the fossil- fueled Morgantown power plant, are reported. Improvements in hot-wire electroexplosive devices (open access)

Improvements in hot-wire electroexplosive devices

Several possible design improvements in hot-wire electroexplosive devices were investigated. These were: an arc-resistant header, greater bridgewire-post heat dissipation area, reacting metal bridgewires, and a secondary explosive substitute for primary explosive. Tests using an SE-1 test fixture with four header-bridgewire models showed highly promising results for raising the overall hot-wire ignition safety margins in electrostatic and rf environments without large increases in firing energy. Various electrical characteristics of the four models are given, together with electrical characteristics and function times of the devices loaded with the secondary explosive. (auth)

Geographical distribution of approx.100-keV electrons above the earth's atmosphere (open access)

Geographical distribution of approx.100-keV electrons above the earth's atmosphere

Previously unpublished satellite data is used to show the distribution of ~100-keV electrons above the Earth's atmosphere. Specific regions of high counting rate are mapped at altitudes of 300 to 400 km. These regions are used to predict the suitability of various launch sites for rocket-borne x-ray astronomical experiments. (auth)

TRILIN: a computer analysis of the transient response of elastic structures (open access)

TRILIN: a computer analysis of the transient response of elastic structures

The computer code TRILIN employs a force method that uses prismatic beam- type elements and discrete masses for the analysis of the transient response of linearly elastic, three-dimensional, frame-type structures subjected to arbitrary loading conditions. Each beam element is capable of resisting tension, bending, and torsion. A global stiffness matrix is obtained by inverting the flexibility relationships. Modal superposition is used to solve the governing equations. (auth)

Program plan for the development of the bedded salt pilot plant (open access)

Program plan for the development of the bedded salt pilot plant

83 of a pilot plant for storing radioactive wastes in bedded salt is described. The program consists of laboratory and field investigations of factors affecting the suitability of a specific site in southeastern New Mexico; of more generally applicable problems associated with geohydrology and rock mechanics; and of considerations bearing on the operational safety of a pilot plant repository. Tasks concerned with the engineering development and design of the facility are also included. (auth)

Confinement of airborne radioactivity. Progress report: January--June 1973 (open access)

Confinement of airborne radioactivity. Progress report: January--June 1973

Radiolytic desorption tests of a series of carbon samples containing KI/ subb 3/, KI, triethylenediamine (TEDA), or combinations of TEDA and KI showed that a 10 x 16 mesh coconut shell carbon containing 1% TEDA, 2% KI, and a proprietary flame retardant retained iodine better than all products tested except those containing higher TEDA concentrations. Ignition temperature measurements on the same series of samples showed that the 1% TEDA--2% KI product has an ignition temperature of about 330 deg C under SRP flow conditions (the same as the KI/sub 3/ carbon). The 1% TEDA--2% KI carbon has been selected to replace the unimpregnated carbon currently used in the Savannah River reactor confinement system. (auth)

Including resonances in the multiperipheral model (open access)

Including resonances in the multiperipheral model

A simple generalization of the multiperipheral model (MPM) and the Mueller--Regge Model (MRM) is given which has improved phenomenological capabilities by explicitly incorporating resonance phenomena, and still is simple enough to be an important theoretical laboratory. The model is discussed both with and without charge. In addition, the one channel, two channel, three channel and N channel cases are explicitly treated. Particular attention is paid to the constraints of charge conservation and positivity in the MRM. The recently proven equivalence between the MRM and MPM is extended to this model, and is used extensively. (auth)

Aerial radiological measuring survey of the area surrounding the Vermont Yankee Generating Station and the Yankee Nuclear Power Station, September 18, 1970

The Aerial Radiological Measuring System (ARMS) was used to survey the area surrounding the Vermont Yankee Generating Station and the Yankee Nuclear Power Station during September 1970. The survey measured terrestrial gamma radiation. A high-sensitivity detection system collected spectral and grosscount data for the flyable portions of the 625 sq. mile survey area. Isotopes identified and exposure rates are consistent with normal background radiation. (auth)

Aerial radiological measuring survey of the Fort Calhoun Station, Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, August 9-10, 1972

The Aerial Radiological Measuring System (ARMS) was used to survey the area surrounding the Fort Calhoun Station during Aug. 1972. The survey measured terrestrial gamma radiation. A highsensitivity detection system collected gamma spectral and grosscount data. The data were then computer processed into a map of a 625 sq. mile area showing isoexposure contours 3 ft above the ground. Exposure rates and isotopes identified are consistent with normal terrestrial background. (auth)
