Flight Measurements of the Dynamic Lateral and Longitudinal Stability of the Bell X-5 Research Airplane at 58.7 Degrees Sweepback
Memorandum presenting an investigation of the dynamic stability of the Bell X-5 research airplane at 58.7 degrees sweepback and at altitudes of 40,000 feet and 25,000 feet over a Mach number range of 0.5 to 0.97. The results show that the longitudinal oscillatory motions are well damped over the entire Mach number range except for residual oscillations resulting primarily from engine gyroscopic coupling with the lateral oscillatory mode. The longitudinal and lateral frequency-response characteristics were obtained and some coupling effects were noted.

The Chemistry of Tributyl Phosphate: A Review
The preparation, purification, and chemical properties of THP have been reviewed with emphasis on the hydrolytic reactions. TBP is chemically a very stable compound as evidenced by its thermal stability and resistance to oxidation. The most important reactions are hydrolytic which cleave the butyl or butoxy group and normally produce butyl alcohol together with dibutyl and monobutyl phosphate (DBP and MBP, respectively), and eventually H/sub 3/PO/sub 4/. Hydrolysis occurs in either the organic phase or the aqueous phase and is first order with respect to the ester. Although the rate in the aqueous phase is much faster than in the organic phase, the solubility is so low in aqueous solutions that the organic phase reactions become more important. Acid hydrolysis depends on both the nature of the acid and the concentration. The order with respect to acid concentration is close to one but often less than one. Hydrolysis is catalyzed by both acids and bases. In the latter case, the reaction occurs only in the aqueous phase and normally stops with the formation of dibutyl phosphate. The hydrolysis rate increases greatly as the temperature is raised and an activation energy of the order of 20 kcal is often found. The …

A FUSED SALT-FLUORIDE VOLATILITY PROCESS FOR RECOVERY AND DECONTAMINATION OF URANIUM
A preliminary chemical flowsheet is presented of a fluoride volatility process for recovering and decontaminating U from heterogeneous reactor fuels after dissolution in a fused salt. In laboratory work, a gross BETA decontamination factor of >10/sup 4/ was obtained in the fluorination of a UF/sub 4/-- NaF-- Zr F/sub 4/ melt by passing the product UF/sub 6/ through NaF at 650 deg C. The solubility of UF/sub 6/ in molten NaF--ZrF/sub 4/ was shown in kinetic studies to cause a lag in the evolution of UF/sub 6/ from the fluorinator. Corrosion of nickel in the fluorination step appeared to be 2 to 4 mils/hr during the time that U was present. The average corrosion rate over the process as a whole yvas less than 0.4 mil/hr. (auth)

Capital and Direct and Indirect Operating Cost Estimates for Mill for Recovering Uranium From Low-Grade Ore With the Higgins Continuous Ion Exchange Contactor
The capital and direct and indirect operating costs were estimated for erecting and operating mills of 220 and 440 tons of ore per day capacity. The ores considered contained 0.15 or 0.30% uranium. The processes considered included crushing, grinding, acid or carbonate leaching, and final recovery of the U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ in a Higgins ion exchange contuctor with a 5 M NaCl, 1 M NaCl, 1 M NH/sub 4/NC/sub 3/, or 1 M cost estimate have been given due and careful consideration with reference to requirements for a mill of this type. Further detailed information with reference to the construction and operation characteristics of the Higgins ion exchange contactor are given in ORNL reports 1907 and 1918. (auth)

RADIOACTIVE WASTE ECONOMICS: OPTIMUM STORAGE TIME PRIOR TO SHIPPING TO DISPOSAL SITE
The economics of waste disposal by pit storage when the geological location of the pits does not coincide with the location of the processing plant are considered. Optimum cooling times before shipment were determined for 250gallon batches of Purex-type waste. Three distances between processing and disposal sites, and three unit storage costs were considered. It was concluded that as the storage cost increases it becomes economical to ship shorter-cooled waste, and as the shipping distance increases, it becomes economical to store waste longer. In the case of 30/gal/yr storage, for 200 miles shipment, essentially no storage should be provided beyond that required for surge in filling carriers. For less highly irradiated material, the optima would shift in the direction of shorter cooling times. Data are tabulated and presented graphically. (C.H.)
