Updated evaluation of hydrocarbon potential, ORNL study area, southeast New Mexico (open access)

Updated evaluation of hydrocarbon potential, ORNL study area, southeast New Mexico

A review of drilling and reservoir performance reveals that no economically recoverable oil and gas exists within the limits of the ORNL Study Area or under the acreage immediately adjoining the Study Area. Three prominent structural highs cross the central portion of the area of investigation; these structural highs carry through from shallow Permian beds to the deeper Siluro-Devonian beds. Hydrocarbon production, when found, is limited to the porous zones on the crests of the structural highs and no oil or gas production in any formation has been found in the synclinal troughs such as the one traversing the central portion of the area in which the ORNL Study Area is located. The current investigation reveals no significant leasing activity in the area of interest surrounding the ORNL Study Area at this time. It is believed that the current value of minerals, as they pertain to oil and gas rights, in the area of interest is no higher than the $100 per acre.

Safety analysis report -- Packages LP-50 tritium package (Packaging of fissile and other radioactive materials)

Elemental tritium is shipped at low pressure in a stainless steel container (LP-50) surrounded by an aluminum vessel and Celotex insulation at least 4 in. thick in a steel drum. Each package contains a large quantity (greater than a Type A quantity) of nonfissile material, as defined in AECM 0529. This report provides the details of the safety analysis performed for this type container.

Water Resources Research Program. Surface thermal plumes: evaluation of mathematical models for the near and complete field (open access)

Water Resources Research Program. Surface thermal plumes: evaluation of mathematical models for the near and complete field

This report evaluates mathematical models that may be used to predict the flow and temperature distributions resulting from heated surface discharges from power-plant outfalls. Part One discusses the basic physics of surface-plume dispersion and provides a critical review of 11 of the most popular and promising plume models developed to predict the near- and complete-field plume. The principal conclusion of the report is that the available models, in their present stage of development, may be used to give only general estimates of plume characteristics; precise predictions are not currently possible. The Shirazi-Davis and Pritchard (No. 1) models appear superior to the others tested and are capable of correctly predicting general plume characteristics. (The predictions show roughly factor-of-two accuracy in centerline distance to a given isotherm, factor-of-two accuracy in plume width, and factor-of-five accuracy in isotherm areas.) The state of the art can best be improved by pursuing basic laboratory studies of plume dispersion along with further development of numerical-modeling techniques.

Determination of soil liquefaction characteristics by large-scale laboratory tests. [Sand] (open access)

Determination of soil liquefaction characteristics by large-scale laboratory tests. [Sand]

The testing program described in this report was carried out to study the liquefaction behavior of a clean, uniform, medium sand. Horizontal beds of this sand, 42 inches by 90 inches by 4 inches were prepared by pluviation with a special sand spreader, saturated, and tested in a shaking table system designed for this program, which applied a horizontal cyclic shear stress to the specimens. Specimen size was selected to reduce boundary effects as much as possible. Values of pore pressures and shear strains developed during the tests are presented for sand specimens at relative densities of 54, 68, 82, and 90 percent, and the results interpreted to determine the values of the stress ratio causing liquefaction at the various relative densities.

Development of input data to energy code for analysis of reactor fuel bundles

The ENERGY 1 code is a semi-empirical method for predicting temperature distributions in wire wrapped rod bundles of a LMFBR. A comparison of ENERGY 1 and MISTRAL 2 is presented. The predictions of ENERGY 1 for special sets of data taken under geometric conditions at the limits of the code are analyzed. 14 references. (auth)

Flow-induced vibration in LMFBR steam generators: a state-of-the-art review (open access)

Flow-induced vibration in LMFBR steam generators: a state-of-the-art review

This state-of-the-art review identifies and discusses existing methods of flow-induced vibration analysis applicable to steam generators, their limitations, and base-technology needs. Also included are discussions of five different LMFBR steam-generator configurations and important design considerations, failure experiences, possible flow-induced excitation mechanisms, vibration testing, and available methods of vibration analysis. The objectives are to aid LMFBR steam-generator designers in making the best possible evaluation of potential vibration in steam-generator internals, and to provide the basis for development of design guidelines to avoid detrimental flow-induced vibration.
