Delayed Failure Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium: Quarterly Report Number 2, December 1961 - March 1962 (open access)

Delayed Failure Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium: Quarterly Report Number 2, December 1961 - March 1962

Abstract: "The purpose of this investigation is to determine the extent to which zirconium and zirconium alloys exhibit delayed failure (static fatigue) as caused by a combination of absorbed hydrogen and applied stress. Both notched and unnotched specimens of unalloyed zirconium and Zircaloy-2 have been hydrogenated to 200 ppm by means of a modified Sieverts apparatus; specimens were evaluated at room temperature. Thus far, no time-dependent fracture has been observed which can be attributed to the delayed failure phenomenon; it appears that these materials are relatively insensitive to static fatigue. The effects of grain size, temperature, cold deformation, and superheated water and steam corrosion on susceptibility to delayed failure are being determined."

High-Temperatuer Creep Evaluation in Carbon Dioxide Atmosphere : Summary Report, October 1, 1959 to March 31, 1961 (open access)

High-Temperatuer Creep Evaluation in Carbon Dioxide Atmosphere : Summary Report, October 1, 1959 to March 31, 1961

This report follows an investigation made to determine creep-rupture data for three sheet materials. Fourteen of sixteen tests were made in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide within hermetically sealed capsules, analyzing the reaction of the three sheet metals: 347 stainless steel, iron-aluminum-chromium alloy designated 261C, and a zirconium-base alloy, AE1H. Minimum creep rate, per cent elongation, and rupture life were determined and reported.

Ground-Water Investigations of the Project GNOME Area, Eddy and Lea Counties, New Mexico

From abstract: The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, through the Office of Test Operations, Albuquerque Operations Office, plans to detonate a nuclear device in a massive salt bed 1,200 feet beneath the land surface. The project, known as Project Gnome, is an element of the Plowshare program--a study of peacetime applications of nuclear fission. The location of the proposed underground shot is in a sparsely-populated area in southeastern Eddy County, N. Mex., east of the Pecos River and about 25 miles southeast of the city of Carlsbad.

Interim Geological Investigations in the U12e.03a and U12e.03b Tunnels, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada

From introduction: The geologic studies in the Ul2e.03a and Ul2e.03b tunnels were conducted as part of the Geological Survey's investigations for the Vela Uniform program, Project Shade, and were completed for the purpose of 1) determining the preshot lithologic, structural, and chemical and physical properties of the tuffs exposed in the tunnels for comparison wits postshot geologic data, and 2) evaluating these data in order to predict the geologic effects of the planned nuclear explosion at tie end of the tunnels.

New burnout correlation for annuli (open access)

New burnout correlation for annuli

A number of burnout tests have been run subsequent to the publication of the burnout equations in DP-355 and DP-725. The range of variables was extended in these tests and the burnout heat flux was measured. This memorandum presents a modified empirical equation, which correlates the new data, for use in the design of fuel assemblies for the HWCTR. We expect to submit this material for a journal publication within the next quarter.

Evaluation of the techniques for end-of-life shutdown of orbiting SNAP reactors (open access)

Evaluation of the techniques for end-of-life shutdown of orbiting SNAP reactors

Two techniques for the end-of-life shutdown of orbiting SNAP reactors are presented. One technique consists of two alternative methods for the destruction of the reactor core. This technique (and others) have been investigated during the past year. A second technique, uses a naturally occurring phenomena, which works on the principle of a low neutron absorbing nuclide decaying to a high neutron absorbing daughter (poison). The present design criteria for the latter technique is that only a small reduction in reactivity should occur during the mission lifetime with the slow build-up of poison eventually shutting down the reactor at some later date. Tritium, an isotope of hydrogen is presented as a parent that appears to meet all of the requirements for such an end-of-life shutdown device. The daughter, He/sup 3/ has a high neutron absorption cross section. The results of a preliminary study of the tritium device are presented.
