Gas chromatographic studies of the relative retention of the sulfur isotopes in carbonyl sulfide, carbon disulfide, and sulfur dioxide

A precision gas chromatograph, coupled to a quadrupole mass spectrometer and an on-line computer, was used to study the fractionation on Porasil A of the /sup 32/S//sup 34/S isotopic pair in a variety of sulfur-containing molecules. Carbonyl sulfide (COS) yielded an average ..cap alpha.. value of 1.00074 +- 0.00017 (standard deviation) for the temperature range 25/sup 0/C to 75/sup 0/C. The carbon disulfide (CS/sub 2/) value was 1.00069 +- 0.00023 for the range 53/sup 0/C to 103/sup 0/C, and that for sulfur dioxide (SO/sub 2/) was 1.00090 +- 0.00018 for the range 62/sup 0/C to 112/sup 0/C. Differential thermodynamic data have been reported. A Porapak Q column showed no fractionation of this isotopic pair in these three molecules.

Demonstration of the Environmental Data Corporation Spectral Fuel Conservation System. Quarterly report, October-December, 1979

A program plan was prepared and submitted to the Department of Energy in November 1979. The criteria that must be satisfied by the host site for a successful demonstration of the Spectral Fuel Conservation System have been developed and are included in this report. The process of demonstration site selection is underway and is expected to be completed on schedule by March 31, 1980. Preliminary discussions with Union Carbide indicate that the coal-fired boilers at the company's specialty chemicals plant in Institute, West Virginia appear to satisfy all the major site criteria. Exchanges of drawings are now in progress for further evaluation prior to undertaking a site inspection visit. Finally, a literature search has been initiated to determine the distribution by size and type of coal-fired boilers in the industrial sector as background to the energy savings analysis required in Task 11.

Experiments on ETA comparing wire-conditioned and non-wire-conditioned beam propagation

This report describes experiments in beam propagation with the ETA beam during 1982 following accelerator cavity modifications which allowed a maximum beam current of up to 8 kA at the entrance to the propagation tank. A prominent new feature of the propagation in high pressure gas was an enhancement of the net current as the beam propagated. In some cases this enhanced current was nearly double the injected beam current. The strong current enhancement was associated with strong transverse hose motion of the beam. The absence of microwave emissions in the range from 6.6 GHz to 31 GHz indicates that this current enhancement is not due to a two-stream instability.

Visual simulation of radiographs

A method for computer simulation of radiographs has been added to the LLNL version of the solid modeler TIPS-1 (Technical Information Processing System-1). This new tool will enable an engineer to compare an actual radiograph of a solid to its computer-generated counterpart. The appearance of discrepancies between the two can be an indication of flaws in the solid object. Simulated radiographs can also be used to preview the placement of x-ray sources to focus on areas of concern before actual radiographs are made.

Parametric testing of a DWPF borosilicate glass

A series of tests have been performed to characterize the chemical stability of a DWPF borosilicate glass sample as part of the Waste Package Task of the NNWSI Project. This material was prepared at the Savannah River Laboratory for the purpose of testing the 165-frit matrix doped with a simulated non-radioactive waste. All tests were conducted at 90{sup 0}C using deionized water and J-13 water (a tuffaceous formation groundwater). In the deionized water tests, both monoliths and crushed glass were tested at various ratios of surface area of the sample to volume of water in order to compare leach rates for different sample geometries or leaching times. Effects on the leach rates due to the presence of crushed tuff and stainless steel material were also investigated in the tests with J-13 water. 4 references, 2 figures, 4 tables.
