Dissociation of Hā‚‚āŗ by Photons (open access)

Dissociation of Hā‚‚āŗ by Photons

Abstract: "A measurement was made of the dissociation of vibrationally-excited H2+ ions by photons having quantum energy in the vicinity of 4 e.v. The calculated cross section from theory is 3 x 10-(-18) cm-2. The experimental result is 10-(-17) cm-2; a factor of 10 uncertainty is present because the photon intensity was unknown by that factor."

Transient Thermal Stresses in Pressure Vessels - Part I: Transient Temperature Distribution - Description of Computer Program

This report describes an IBM 704 Computer program for the calculation of transient temperature distribution in axially symmetric solid or hollow bodies. It is the first part of Transient Thermal Stresses in Pressure Vessels. The present report mainly describes the use of the computer program and gives, for two problems, a comparison between computed and analytically known results. The analysis is reported briefly in this report.

In-Flight Gains Realized by Modifying a Twin Side-Inlet Induction System

Memorandum presenting an investigation of the effects of modifying a twin side-inlet duct system on an interceptor airplane as recorded and analyzed over an altitude range from about 25,000 to 51,000 feet throughout the transonic speed range to a Mach number of about 1.2. The modifications consisted primarily of redesigning the inlet lip, increasing the cross-sectional area of the inlet and diffuser, and adding a region of duct contraction ahead of the engine.

High Pressure Ejector Test (open access)

High Pressure Ejector Test

A commercial jet ejector was operated over a range of pressures up to 1500 psi to determine its characteristics. The purpose of the test was to establish head-capacity and efficiency curves to serve as a guide in sizing much larger lets for high pressure applications. Presumably, larger jets would have similar characteristics except for flow rate. Water, circulated by a canned- rotor pump, was the motive fluid; the driven fluid was N gas. All tests were run at room temperature. Both gas head and efficiency varied directly with systcm pressure up to 1000 psi and dropped slightly at 1500 psi. The optimum operating point was not reached, but efficiencies ot approximately 25% were attained at 1000 to 1500 psi. The ejector appears attractive as a simple and efficient device for pumping gas at high pressure. (auth)

Hazards Summary Report for the Reflector-Control Critical-Assembly Experiments (open access)

Hazards Summary Report for the Reflector-Control Critical-Assembly Experiments

Critical experiments are described, and the hazards attpendant to these experiments are evaluated for a reflector-controllped boiling-peterogeneous- reactor design. The proposed reactor design is water moderated and reflected. However, to provide maximum flexibility and safety, the critical asspembly is a thermal reactor moderated and reflected with plastic having appropriate voids to simulate water. A spection of the plastic reflector is movable to represent changes in the waterrelector level. The data obtained using this reflectorcontrolled assembly is then suppliped to an electronic reactor simulator which is connected to a full-scale mock-up of the proposed hydraulic control system. In this manner, thpe characteristics of thpe complete system are determined. The fuel-element assemblies are composed of strips of aluminum and Teflon-coated uranium sandwiched with plastic and pecased in aluminum boxes. One- half of the core is on a movable table, while the other half is on a fixed table. Primary control and safety of the asspembly is achieved by inserting or withdrawing sandwiched stainlpess steel-cadmium rpegulating and safety plates and by increasing or decreasing the distance between the two core halves. For safety, the maximum normal rate of reactivity addition has been limited to an pestimated 0.04 per cent per sec for control-rod ā€¦

HIGH TEMPERATURE MODERATOR PROGRAM

The purpose of this memorandum is to outline the high temperature hydride moderator program proposed for the.Metallurgy Division. The objectives of this program are (1) to provide physical and mechanical property data required by the reactor designers, (2) to develop methods for fabricating moderator assemblies, and (3) to devise.and conduct tests to evaluate theseĀ· assemblies. The requirements in each of these areas and the work proposed to meet them are outlined.
