Burkhart, Executive Secretary, Sacramento 14, California, dated July 11, 1951. Burkhart replies to Carswell regarding the two requests for pardon informing him, that under California law, both subjects are on life paroles, therefore, the Authority cannot refix their sentences to terminate their paroles. Subjects must apply through the Governor's office.

Shivers expresses his appreciation for the "kind expression of interest" by Carswell in Shiver's future public service, to have this evidence of support of the substantial citizenship of this State. He congratulates Carswell on the splendid service he is rendering the State and the men under his supervision as Chairman of the Volunteer Parole Board in Abilene.

A letter addressed to Mr. & Mrs. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas from "Jake" [J. D. Sandefer, Jr.], Breckenridge, Texas, dated March 21, 1951. Sandefer issues an invitation to attend the annual sunrise service Easter morning including breakfast at the Wooten Hotel. He notes that each year they discuss discontinuing the annual get-together, yet, continue.

A letter addressed to Mr. T. N. Carswell from Ed Hildebrand, Midland, Texas, dated October 10, 1951. Hildebrand advises Carswell of his work load in construction and that he is doing well.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas from E. M. Collier, Administrator, Hendrick Memorial Hospital dated May 28, 1951. The letter includes a notification by Collier of a meeting of the Board of Trustees which has been called by Mr. Anderson. Dinner will be served.

A letter addressed to John Ben Shepperd, Secretary of State, Austin, Texas, from T. N. Carswell, Chairman, Taylor County Parole Board. Carswell advises Shepperd of an enclosed application for clemency regarding the case of which he spoke to Shepperd and McGill about when in his office in July. Carswell requests that Shepperd and Governor Shivers join him in his request to Governor Warren for clemency for Subject but only after reading the history and having full knowledge of the case.

Welsh informs Subject 17095 that the completed application for executive clemency is being forwarded to the Adult Authority for consideration and a recommendation to the Governor.

Kirk acknowledges receipt of the letter from Carswell dated December 1 concerning Subject and advises that a copy of the letter and enclosures were sent to Mr. Walter A. Gordon, who is Chairman of the California Adult Authority.

Hill advises of the progress of his coffee business stating, "As things appear today, there is justification for believing that it will be but a short time before reasonable rewards are in their shaping." He confides, "We may or may not be able to obtain contracts for furnishing various government projects with coffee extract—we will operate henceforth in a secret manner." Hill handwrites postscript down left side of page acknowledging omissions and typographical errors which he "will not attempt to correct".
