GRPANL: a program for deconvoluting and interpreting complex peak clusters

GRPANL (GRouP ANaLysis) is a general-purpose peak fitting program that first determines gamma-ray and x-ray energies and intensities for specified peaks or clusters of peaks in a spectrum and then proceeds to interpret these results, determining both the radioisotopes detected and the amounts of each in the sample. Versions of the program are now running on the Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) VAX and PDP-11 computers. The code has several unique capabilities for deconvoluting and interpreting difficult analytical situations that other codes usually cannot handle.

The goals of technology transfer to the private sector and the potential positive impact on the community conclude the oral presentation.

Novel probe for determining the size and position of a relativistic electron beam

In order to determine the size and position of a relativistic electron beam inside the wiggler magnetic field of a Free Electron Laser (FEL), we have developed a new probe which intercepts the electron beam on a high Z target and monitors the resulting bremsstrahlung radiation. The probe is designed to move along the entire three meters of the wiggler. This FEL is designed to operate in the microwave region (2 to 8 mm) and the interaction region is an oversized waveguide with a cross section 3 cm x 9.8 cm. The axial probe moves inside this waveguide. The probe stops the electron beam on a Tantalum target and the resulting x-rays are scattered in the forward direction. A scintillator behind the beam stop reacts to the x-rays and emits visible light in the region where the x-rays strike. An array of fiber optics behind the scintillator transmits the visible light to a Reticon camera system which images the visible pattern from the scintillator. Processing the optical image is done by digitizing and storing the image and/or recording the image on video tape. Resolution and performance of this probe will be discussed.

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and its 1,000 member systems are involved in the research, development and utilization of many different types of supplemental and alternative energy resources. We share a strong commitment to the wise and efficient use of this country's energy resources as the ultimate answer to our national prosperity and economic growth. WRECA is indebted to the United States Department of Energy for funding the NRECA/DOE Geothermal Workshop which was held in San Diego, California in October, 1980. We would also like to express our gratitude to each of the workshop speakers who gave of their time, talent and experience so that rural electric systems in the Western U. S. might gain a clearer understanding of the geothermal potential in their individual service areas. The participants were also presented with practical, expert opinion regarding the financial and technical considerations of using geothermal energy for electric power production. Physical phenomena induced by passage of intense electromagnetic pulses (including CO/sub 2/ lasers) through the atmosphere

The electron fluid equations are combined with Maxwell's equations to investigate the physical phenomena that occurs when short, intense electromagnetic pulses (including the CO/sub 2/ laser pulse) interact with the atmosphere. The phenomena of ''tailed erosion'' occurs when the pulse intensity exceeds the air-breakdown threshold. In some cases, the erosion of the pulse occurs first in the middle of the pulse and then occurs in the tail of the pulse. In addition, we discovered that the amount of the energy that a pulse carries through the atmosphere is independent of whether it is propagating vertically upward from the Earth's surface or vertically downward toward the Earth's surface, provided the distance the pulse travels is the same for both directions of the propagation. 20 refs., 9 figs.

Noisy time-dependent spectra

The definition of a time-dependent spectrum registered by an idealized spectrometer responding to a time-varying electromagnetic field as proposed by Eberly and Wodkiewicz and subsequently applied to the spectrum of laser-induced fluorescence by Eberly, Kunasz, and Wodkiewicz is here extended to allow a stochastically fluctuating (interruption model) environment: we provide an algorithm for numerical determination of the time-dependent fluorescence spectrum of an atom subject to excitation by an intense noisy laser and interruptive relaxation.

Microwave Heating and Current Drive in Tokamaks

The use of powerful microwave sources provide unique opportunities for novel and efficient heating and current-drive schemes in the electron-cyclotron and lower-hybrid ranges of frequencies. Free- electron lasers and relativistic klystrons are new sources that have a number of technical advantages over conventional, lower-intensity sources; their use can lead to improved current-drive efficiencies and better penetration into a reactor-grade plasma in specific cases. This paper reports on modeling of absorption and current drive, in intense-pulse and quasilinear regimes, and on analysis of parametric instabilities and self-focusing. 16 refs., 2 figs.

International technology exchange in support of the Defense Waste Processing Facility wasteform production

The nearly completed Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) is a Department of Energy (DOE) facility at the Savannah River Site that is designed to immobilize defense high level radioactive waste (HLW) by vitrification in borosilicate glass and containment in stainless steel canisters suitable for storage in the future DOE HLW repository. The DWPF is expected to start cold operation later this year (1990), and will be the first full scale vitrification facility operating in the United States, and the largest in the world. The DOE has been coordinating technology transfer and exchange on issues relating to HLW treatment and disposal through bi-lateral agreements with several nations. For the nearly fifteen years of the vitrification program at Savannah River Laboratory, over two hundred exchanges have been conducted with a dozen international agencies involving about five-hundred foreign national specialists. These international exchanges have been beneficial to the DOE's waste management efforts through confirmation of the choice of the waste form, enhanced understanding of melter operating phenomena, support for paths forward in political/regulatory arenas, confirmation of costs for waste form compliance programs, and establishing the need for enhancements of melter facility designs. Yield stress of Type 21-6-9 stainless steel over a wide range of strain rate (10/sup -5/ to 10/sup 4/ s/sup -1/) and temperature

Hopkinson split-bar tests were performed on Type 21-6-9 austenitic stainless steel from ambient temperature to 1023 K. These high-strain-rate tests (10/sup 2/ to 10/sup 4/ s/sup -1/) were compared with lower-strain-rate tests (10/sup -4/ s/sup -1/). The results indicate that over this temperature range, the strain-rate sensitivity of 21-6-9 is not strongly dependent on the strain rate. This suggests that the mechanism(s) of plastic flow at the higher rates is similar to that at the lower rates. This contention was corroborated by transmission electron microscopy.

Nondestructive Assay of Uranium Enrichment with Gamma Rays

An instrument has been developed and tested for nondestructive assay of 235U enrichment of uranium oxide powder contained in sealed 1-gallon cans. A theoretical correlation of enrichment vs. count rate agrees well with the calibration measurements and provides guidelines for applicability. A microcomputer simplifies operator requirements and provides on-line enrichment results.

Trim coils and magnet alignment in MFTF-B

Performance of the MFTF-B tandem mirror reactor is critically dependent upon precise alignment of the superconducting magnets in the transition region. Given the size and nature of these magnets, mechanical alignment under operating conditions to the tolerances required is an impossible task, as placement must anticipate deflections due to vacuum conditions, cooling to cryogenic temperatures, and magnetic forces. A cost-effective solution to the alignment problem is presented here. In each transition region, a set of eight trimming magnets capable of introducing dipole- and quadrupole-field components allows the field curvatures to be finely tuned to offset the effects of mechanical alignment errors. Trimming current values for correcting representative single- and multiple-coil misalignments, as well as an analytic method for determining them are given. Finally, design considerations that will minimize the need for trim coils in future tandem mirror devices are suggested.

Safeguard Vulnerability Analysis Program (SVAP)

This report gives an overview of the Safeguard Vulnerability Analysis Program (SVAP) developed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. SVAP was designed as an automated method of analyzing the safeguard systems at nuclear facilities for vulnerabilities relating to the theft or diversion of nuclear materials. SVAP addresses one class of safeguard threat: theft or diversion of nuclear materials by nonviolent insiders, acting individually or in collusion. SVAP is a user-oriented tool which uses an interactive input medium for preprocessing the large amounts of safeguards data. Its output includes concise summary data as well as detailed vulnerability information.

A coupled channel analysis has been carried out using amplitudes of the K/sub s//sup 0/K/sub s//sup 0/ system produced in the reaction ..pi../sup -/p ..-->.. K/sub s//sup 0/K/sub s//sup 0/n at 22 Gev/c, which contained about 40,000 events in the low-t region (absolute value of t-tmin < 0.1 Gev/sup 2/). The I/sup G/ = 0/sup +/, J/sup PC/ = 0/sup + +/, 2/sup + +/, 4/sup + +/ amplitudes from this analysis is considered, together with available data from other experiments in channels with the same quantum numbers in order to determine which 0/sup + +/ and 2/sup + +/ isoscalar mesons have significant pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar couplings. It is found that we need one pole for the 4/sup + +/ amplitudes while the 2/sup + +/ needs five poles and the 0/sup + +/ needs 7 poles.
