Washing Away Bioprocessing Cost: Pressurized Hot Wash Improves Cellulosic Ethanol Technology

Thermochemical pretreatment is a key step in biotechnology for converting lignocellulosic biomass to fuel ethanol and other valuable chemicals. U.S. Department of Energy Biofuels Program researchers have found that adding a Pressurized Hot Wash (PHW) step immediately following pretreatment--while the pretreated material is still at high temperature and pressure--significantly improves the overall process. The ''hot-washed'' pretreated material can be more efficiently digested by cellulase enzymes. Additionally, soluble lignins with potentially valuable unique reactive properties are separated out.

U.S. Team Green Building Challenge 2002 (open access)

U.S. Team Green Building Challenge 2002

Flier about the U.S. Team and its projects participating in the International Green Building Challenge. Along with many other countries, the United States accepted the Green Building Challenge (GBC), an international effort to evaluate and improve the performance of buildings worldwide. GBC started out in 1996 as a competition to determine which country had the greenest buildings; it evolved into a cooperative process among the countries to measure the performance of green buildings. Although the auto industry can easily measure efficiency in terms of miles per gallon, the buildings industry has no standard way to quantify energy and environmental performance. The Green Building Challenge participants hope that better tools for measuring the energy and environmental performance of buildings will be an outcome of their efforts and that these tools will lead to higher and better performance levels in buildings around the world. The ultimate goal is to design, construct, and operate buildings that contribute to global sustainability by conserving and/or regenerating natural resources and minimizing nonrenewable energy use. The United States' Green Building Challenge Team '02 selected five buildings from around the country to serve as case studies; each of the five U.S. building designs (as well as all international …

S-PLUS Library For Nonlinear Bayesian Regression Analysis (open access)

S-PLUS Library For Nonlinear Bayesian Regression Analysis

This document describes a library of Splus functions used for nonlinear Bayesian regression in general and IR estimation in particular. This library has been developed to solve a general class of problems described by the nonlinear regression model: Y = F (beta, data)+ E where Y represents a vector of measurements, and F(beta, data) represents a Splus function that has been constructed to describe the measurements. The function F(beta, data) depends upon beta, a vector of parameters to be estimated, while data$ is an Splus object containing any other information needed by the model. The errors, E, are assumed to be independent, normal, unbiased and to have known standard deviations of stdev(E) = sd.E. The components in beta are split into two groups; estimation parameters and nuisance parameters. The Bayesian prior on the estimation parameters will generally be non-informative, while the prior on the nuisance parameters will be constructed to reflect the information we have about them. We hope an extended beta distribution is general enough to adequately represent the information we have on them. While we expect these functions to be improved and revised, this library is mature enough to be used without major modification.

GeoPowering the West: Geothermal Energy--The Bountiful, Clean Energy Source for the West

General brochure outlining benefits and activities of DOE Geothermal Technologies Program GeoPowering the West project. The U.S. Department of Energy GeoPowering the West (GPW) project increases awareness of how geothermal energy will enhance local economies and strengthen our nation's energy security while minimizing environmental impact. Working in cooperative effort with the American geothermal industry, power producers and suppliers, industrial consumers, residential end-users, tribes, and federal, state, and local officials, GPW provides technical support, guidance, information, and assistance to states and local communities to explore and develop their own geothermal energy resources. GPW goals are to double the number of states generating geothermal electricity to eight by 2006, and to supply heat or power needs to seven million Western homes and businesses by 2015.
