Kansas towns like Arkansas City were the staging area prior to the 1893 Land Run into the Cherokee Strip. The reference to "booth" is likely related to the nine booths that were erected, five on the Kansas border and four on the border of Oklahoma, where people were to register and receive certificates. These certificates were to be shown before legal entry could be made to the strip on opening day, and they must also must be shown when filing claims.

The woman standing on the right is Alice Hearrell. Chisholm and Hearrell are holding their diplomas. The Bloomfield Academy was established in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, in 1852. It was located approximately three miles south of Achille, Oklahoma.
