Proper Land Use

Photograph of productive soil maintained and improved on a 2% slope by use of conservation practices. Land is terraced and contour farmed and crops are rotated. Soil improving crops are used regularly. The crop of oats, now on the land show lodging because of excessive rainfall as did practically 100% of all small grain in the district in 1957. Oats were 5 feet high and promised a good yield when the rains started. Soil Unit 6CP.

Silt Deposits

Photograph of silt deposit caused by flood. The 5 or 6; rain Sept. 26, 1959, caused hundreds of silt deposit areas on tributaries of the Red Rock Creek. This silt deposit area is 1 mile below a proposed detention dam site.

This land had been formerly cultivated and is now being planted with native bluestem grasses, using an Ezee-Flow fertilizer spreader as a planter and a rotary hoe cultivator being pulled in reverse. The seeds were harvested and obtained under Soil Conservation District supervision as the farm is under a Soil Conservation program. Mr. Vance shown in the picture. OK-240-8.

The brush is being mowed and the area will be deferred-grassed in 1958 and 1959 with the area mowed again in 1959. Photograph of Pasture. Blue River bottom land cleared in 1956. It consisted of wet, poorly drained timber land near worthless pasture before clearing and planting to Midland Bermuda grass and clover. Planted to Bermuda grass in 1957. 500 acre ranch has 200 acres under cultivation. By 1959, it had 135 grown cows and 500 sheep and offspring, using vetch and clover for sown pasture. 10 on hill. 11 on bottom was cleared. OK-1050-10.

Photograph of a pine nursery. Bill Campbell, nursery manager, preparing to plow up trees. Tractor loosens trees with bar, leaving trees loose for hand pulling. Trees are sorted and packed in bundles of 50 trees each. Little River Soil Conservation District crews pick up the trees at the nursery she dfor farm delivery. Three large industrial forest firms give small landowners trees on a tree-for-tree-matched basis. These trees are given to small land owners to encourage them to increase their timber stands. Photograph of a pine nursery located on Yashau Creek. The output of this nursery goes largely to cooperators in the Little River Soil Conservation District. The District plants seedlings for cooperators on contract at $0.75 per 100 trees. Approximately 300,000 trees in the District in 1956. Drought reduced the output of the nursery in 1956 by abour 50%. OK-411-12.

Crop Rotation Vetch and Rye

Photograph of Conservation Crop Rotation. Vetch and rye for pasture and silage. Field has been planted for 5 years to improve soil. 1958 it was pastured, 15 head on this 52 acres until May 1; cut 8-10 ton silage per acre. Put 250 ton in one silo and expects to fill another, (Special) -- cut 9 ton and placed in his stock ponds to clear ater and supply fish food.
