2009 Groundwater Monitoring Report Project Shoal Area, Corrective Action Unit 447 (open access)

2009 Groundwater Monitoring Report Project Shoal Area, Corrective Action Unit 447

This report presents the 2009 groundwater monitoring results collected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Legacy Management (LM) at the Project Shoal Area (PSA) Subsurface Corrective Action Unit (CAU) 447 in Churchill County, Nevada. Responsibility for the environmental site restoration of the PSA was transferred from the DOE Office of Environmental Management to LM on October 1, 2006. The environmental restoration process and corrective action strategy for CAU 447 are conducted in accordance with the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order (FFACO 1996, as amended February 2008) entered into by DOE, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the State of Nevada. The corrective action strategy for the site includes monitoring in support of site closure. This report summarizes investigation activities associated with CAU 447 that were conducted at the PSA during fiscal year 2009.

Studying the Underlying Event in Drell-Yan and High Transverse Momentum Jet Production at the Tevatron (open access)

Studying the Underlying Event in Drell-Yan and High Transverse Momentum Jet Production at the Tevatron

We study the underlying event in proton-antiproton collisions by examining the behavior of charged particles (transverse momentum p{sub T} > 0.5 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |{eta}| < 1) produced in association with large transverse momentum jets ({approx}2.2 fb{sup -1}) or with Drell-Yan lepton-pairs ({approx}2.7 fb{sup -1}) in the Z-boson mass region (70 < M(pair) < 110 GeV/c{sup 2}) as measured by CDF at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use the direction of the lepton-pair (in Drell-Yan production) or the leading jet (in high-p{sub T} jet production) in each event to define three regions of {eta}-{phi} space; toward, away, and transverse, where {phi} is the azimuthal scattering angle. For Drell-Yan production (excluding the leptons) both the toward and transverse regions are very sensitive to the underlying event. In high-p{sub T} jet production the transverse region is very sensitive to the underlying event and is separated into a MAX and MIN transverse region, which helps separate the hard component (initial and final-state radiation) from the beam-beam remnant and multiple parton interaction components of the scattering. The data are corrected to the particle level to remove detector effects and are then compared with several QCD Monte-Carlo models. The goal of this analysis is to provide …

A new proposal to measure K^+ -> pi^+ nu nubar (open access)

A new proposal to measure K^+ -> pi^+ nu nubar

For an experimentalist in high energy physics, the most interesting experiments that one should pursue is often well known. The very rare CP violating decay of the kaon into a pion and two neutrinos (both the charged and neutral modes ) is such an experiment. We have recently proposed the charged kaon experiment to Fermilab as proposal P966. We present her a general overview of that proposal. The goal is to obtain of order 1000 events in order to confront the expected theoretical calculations and to search for physics beyond the standard model.
