Photograph of Arbuckle Soil and Water Conservation District [SWCD] harvesting Bermuda grass roots. This field, sprigged in 1959 has been heavily grazed for the past two years. The area harvested, at this time, produced enough sprigs to plant 20 acres. Area is approximately 165 feet long and 45 feet wide. Approximately 10 bushels of roots are being planted per acre. Emphasis was placed on soil and crop management problems of the Cross Timbers [referring to strip of land, a mix of prairie, savanna and woodland, that runs across southeastern Kansas, central Oklahoma and central Texas] with discussion on such subjects as: Breeding, and the Selection of Forage Grasses and Legumes; The Use of Fertilizers in Establishing Pasture Grasses; Tour of Headquarters Farm; Tour of Biomedical Division Laboratories; and Tour of Lone Grove Farm studying small grain variety tests, forage evaluation on Cross Timber soils; Deep Plowing Experiments; Cropping Systems and Fertilization; Pasture Establishment and Management; and Brush and Timber Control. Arrangements were made through Dave Rykar, in charge of Public Relations for the Foundation. OK-298-2.
