Flutter of a uniform wing with an arbitrarily placed mass according to a differential-equation analysis and a comparison with experiment (open access)

Flutter of a uniform wing with an arbitrarily placed mass according to a differential-equation analysis and a comparison with experiment

Report presenting a method for the calculation of flutter speed of a uniform wing carrying an arbitrarily placed concentrated mass. The method involves the solution of the differential equations of motion of the wing at flutter speed and does not require the assumption of specific normal modes of vibration.

Investigation at low speeds of the effect of aspect ratio and sweep on rolling stability derivatives of untapered wings

Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation conducted in rolling flow to determine the effects of aspect ratio and sweep on the rolling stability derivatives for a series of untapered wings. The results indicated that when the aspect ratio is held constant, an increase in sweepback angle causes a significant reduction in the damping in roll at low lift coefficients for only the higher aspect ratios tested.

Critical shear stress of infinitely long, simply supported plate with transverse stiffeners

From Summary: "A theoretical solution is given for the critical shear stress of an infinitely long, simply supported, flat plate with identical, equally spaced, transverse stiffeners of zero torsional stiffness. Results are obtained by means of the Lagrangian multiplier method and are presented in the form of design charts. Experimental results are included and are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results."

Reinforced Circular Cutouts in Plane Sheets

Note presenting an attempt to design the reinforcement of a cutout in a plane sheet in such a way that it is as nearly as possible equivalent to the part of the structure which has been cut out. A perfect equivalence would mean that the stresses and displacements of the structure remain the same as those which would have appeared without the cutout.

Ambient Pressure Determination at High Altitudes by Use of Free-Molecule Theory (open access)

Ambient Pressure Determination at High Altitudes by Use of Free-Molecule Theory

"Several methods (references 1 and 2) based on gas-dynamic principles are available for reducing such measurements. The results obtained by these methods are subject to the limitation of the gas-dynamic theory which is that the mean free path of the molecules between impacts, is small with respect to the measuring device. Inasmuch as no information on the subject is to present known to be available, the purpose of the present paper is to present a method based on the concept of free-molecule theory for use in connection with this problem" (p. 1).

Dynamometer-stand investigation of a group of mufflers

Report presenting an experimental investigation of a series of exhaust mufflers installed on a typical six-cylinder light-airplane engine mounted on a ground dynamometer sound. Several conclusions regarding muffler design are drawn from this testing. Since engine and propeller noise are about equal for this power-plant installation, both engine-exhaust and propeller noises must be reduced to obtain a sizable reduction in overall sound-pressure level.

Refrigeration System Used in Mercury Isotope Collections (open access)

Refrigeration System Used in Mercury Isotope Collections

From introduction: During 1948, the Isotope Research and Production Division undertook to obtain small quantities of nearly pure mercury isotopes by electromagnetic isotope separation. The possible use of a mercury isotope of even-numbered mass to establish an international standard of length required an isotopic purity greater than 99 per cent. It, became apparent that this degree of separation could only be achieved by preventing random diffusion of un-ionized mercury which otherwise would contaminate the isotope collectors.

Supplemental Technical Report on an Improved Process for the Manufacture of High Purity Calcium, Period Covered November 10, 1948 to January 31, 1949

Abstract. Experimental work was carried out to improve material conversion efficiency and to reduce handling costs inherent in the present process for production of high purity calcium. Charges up to 54 pounds were handled successfully in the equipment available. Material losses were reduced and more complete removal of alkali and alkaline earth metals was effected by controlled pressures of inert gas and by melting under positive pressure of Argon.

Decomposition of Water at High Temperatures and Pressures Under Reactor Irradiation (open access)

Decomposition of Water at High Temperatures and Pressures Under Reactor Irradiation

Partial abstract: "The investigation of the high temperature and pressure dissociation of water under irradiation was undertaken by the Power Pile Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in an effort to determine the degree of importance of the phenomenon with respect to the design of a high temperature water-cooled power reactor. Theory and past experimentation indicate that net steady-state dissociation is determined by the rates of the dissociation and recombination reactions under the imposed conditions, the dissociation rate being essentially a function of flux and the recombination rate essentially a function of temperature" (p. 3).
