Radioactive Isotopes of Bismuth (open access)

Radioactive Isotopes of Bismuth

Five isotopes of bismuth occur in nature. Using particle accelerators providing helium ions up to 40 Mev in energy and deuterons up to 20 Mev in energy, it was possible to produce and identify two artificial radioactive isotopes. With the advent of the 184-inch Berkeley syncho-cyclotron and its hundreds of Mev energies, it was possible to form highly neutron-deficient bismuth isotopes extending more than ten mass units below stable Bi(209).

The Use of Laboratory High Frequency Induction Furnaces (open access)

The Use of Laboratory High Frequency Induction Furnaces

Equations are derived for the rates of heating of objects in induction furnaces and for the maximum temperatures attainable. The equations are primarily useful in designing conducting crucibles, shells, and cylinders so as to increase the power input and decrease heat losses. A very brief treatment is given of the factors which influence the current in the induction coil. The performances of various induction furnaces are compared.

Present Status of the Bevatron R. F. System (open access)

Present Status of the Bevatron R. F. System

The general method of controlling the radio frequency for the full scale Bevatron will be the same as that used on the 1/4 scale machine. The details of course will be modified to meet the requirements of greater range, higher output voltage and closer tracking tolerances. In addition, there is the added complication introduced by the current ripple.

Studies of the Metabolism of Certain Fission Products and Plutonium (open access)

Studies of the Metabolism of Certain Fission Products and Plutonium

A short survey of some of the metabolic relationships of the elements, cerium, colurbium, plutonium, strontium, yttrium, and zirconium is presented. While the results of internally deposited radium have not been investigated in these experiments, they have been extensively studies by others. Because so much is known of its biological effects, it has been included in this historical survey.

High Energy Excitation Functions in the Heavy Region

The electrostatically deflected beam of the 184-inch cyclotron has been used with the stacked foil and absorber technique to determine the excitation functions. The data are presented graphically and discussed individually for each of the reactions. The results are discussed in terms of compound nucleus formation, transparency effects, and other factors in order to arrive at a qualitative picture for the mechanism of high energy nuclear reactions with heavy nuclei.

The Photoproduction of Mesons from Hydrogen (open access)

The Photoproduction of Mesons from Hydrogen

In an effort to gain information on the nature of the photon-meson and photon-nucleon interaction, a study of the artificial production of mesons by photons has been made at the Berkeley synchrotron. The major effort of this research was concentrated on a measurement of the energy and angular distribution of u+-mesons produced when the photons strike a target of liquid hydrogen. Detection of the mesons is accomplished electronically by the technique of delayed coincidence.

Evaluation of the Pentaether and Chelate Processes for the Chemical Separation of Plutonium and Uranium

Research at the University of California Radiation Laboratory has been directed toward the development of processes designed to recover plutonium and uranium from neutron-irradiated uranium. This report has been prepared in answer to requests for information by interested workers in the Atomic Energy programs. The material discussed herein represents the efforts of a sizable research group over several years, and summarizes both the current status of the investigation and the future program now contemplated.

Production of Pi-Mesons in Lead by High Energy Proton Bombardment (open access)

Production of Pi-Mesons in Lead by High Energy Proton Bombardment

Our knowledge of the properties of mesons and their interactions with nuclei has come from two sources. Studies of cosmic ray phenomena provided the earliest information. The discovery that mesons may be produced artificially by bombardment of nuclei with radiations from high energy accelerators has, on the other hand, made it feasible to undertake a wide variety of investigations under more controlled conditions than is possible in cosmic ray experiments. In such experiments mesons have been produced by high-energy protons, alpha-particles and neutrons.

The Counting Efficiency of Counter Tubes with Aluminum, Copper and Gold Cathodes for X-Rays in the Range 5 Kev to 60 Kev

The author's measurement using counting tubes were performed with an X-ray beam, produced by an X-ray tube. The X-ray beam impinges on only a very small part of the counting tube. In this work the counting efficiency of counting tubes with A1-Cu- and Au-cathodes is determined for X-radiation in the range 5 Kev to 60 Kev.
