The Decontamination of Uranium from Fission Products by the Use of the Uranyl Oxalate Precipitation Reaction (open access)

The Decontamination of Uranium from Fission Products by the Use of the Uranyl Oxalate Precipitation Reaction

Abstract: "Decontamination factors of the order of 10-4 were obtained for Beta and Gamma emitters present as fission products when uranium was precipitated from 50 mC activity level solutions as uranyl oxalate under normal uranium yield conditions for three cycles (~60%). Factors of the order of 10-3 were obtained by the use of this reaction with similar solutions under relatively high uranium yield conditions for three cycles (~90%). The uranium peroxide precipitation reaction proved to be of no value on such solutions, yielding decontamination factors of only 17.1 Beta emitters and 1.2 for Gamma emitters for three cycles."

The Stratigraphy of the Upper Part of the Bone Valley Formation and its Relation to the Leached Zone (open access)

The Stratigraphy of the Upper Part of the Bone Valley Formation and its Relation to the Leached Zone

From abstract: The two topmost zones of the Bone Valley formation at the Homeland mine are a phosphate-cemented quartz sandstone and an underlying pebbly and clayey quartz and phosphate sand characterized by graded bedding. This sequence is found in every other area of the land-pebble field. Therefore, these zones are considered to be stratigraphic units and the transition between them to be a key horizon.

A Method for the Design of Sweptback Wings Warped to Produce Specified Flight Characteristics at Supersonic Speeds (open access)

A Method for the Design of Sweptback Wings Warped to Produce Specified Flight Characteristics at Supersonic Speeds

One of the problems connected with the sweptback wing is the difficulty of controlling the location of the center of pressure and hence the pitching moment. A method is presented for designing a wing to be self-trimming at a given set of flight conditions. Concurrently, the spanwise distribution of load on the wing is made to be approximately elliptical, in an effort to maintain low wing drag.

Possible Application of Blade Boundary-Layer Control to Improvement of Design and Off-Design Performance of Axial-Flow Turbomachines (open access)

Possible Application of Blade Boundary-Layer Control to Improvement of Design and Off-Design Performance of Axial-Flow Turbomachines

"A theoretical discussion of the application of blade boundary-layer control to increase the efficiency and the stage pressure ratio and to improve off-design performance of turbomachines is presented. A method based on the potential flow of a compressible fluid is developed for designing suction, or ejection, slotted blades having a prescribed velocity distribution along the blade and in the slot. The effect of the boundary layer on the design of the slot and the effect of ejecting gas at stagnation pressures and temperatures different from free-stream values are discussed" (p. 1).

Torsional Strength of Stiffened D-Tubes

"The present report covers a series of torsional tests on stiffened D-tubes of alclad 24S-T3 aluminum alloy having a cross section similar to the NACA 0012 airfoil section and a closing web at 30 percent of the chord. The stiffeners consisted of ribs and stringers. An average-strength chart has been developed for this type of structure that takes into account the skin thickness, rib spacing, and stringer spacing. This chart may also be used for unstiffened D-tubes" (p. 1).
