Full-Scale Investigation of the Maximum Lift and Flow Characteristics of an Airplane Having Approximately Triangular Plan Form

Report discussing an investigation of the DM-1 glider, which has an approximately triangular plan form, with auxiliary studies of a model of triangular wings. The pitching-moment coefficient, drag coefficient, and angle of attack with the lift coefficient are provided. Results indicated that the angles of descent without power are likely to be prohibitive and airplanes with the tested type of wings will not be able to land safely without power.

Memorandum presenting a determination of the performance of a single-cylinder spark-ignition engine modified to operate on a compression-ignition cycle with a compression ratio of 8.0. Experimental data were obtained at an inlet-manifold pressure of 100 inches of mercury absolute, fuel-air ratios of 0.040 and 0.025, and engine exhaust pressures of 30 to 100 inches of mercury absolute. Results regarding single-cylinder-engine experimental data and full-scale-engine calculations are provided.

Two-Dimensional Wind-Tunnel Investigation at High Reynolds Numbers of an NACA 65A006 Airfoil With High-Lift Devices

Report presenting an investigation of an NACA 65A006 airfoil equipped with high-lift devices, including a 0.15-chord drooped-nose flap and a 0.20-chord plain trailing-edge flap. Airfoil section lift, pitching-moment, and drag characteristics obtained at high Reynolds numbers and low Mach numbers with the flaps deflected individually and simultaneously are presented. At Reynolds numbers up to 9.0 x 10(exp 6), the optimum combination of drooped-nose and plain trailing-edge flaps increased the maximum section lift coefficients from 0.78 to 1.89.

"On the basis of a recently developed theory for finite sweptback wings at supersonic speeds, calculations of the supersonic wave drag at zero lift were made for a series of wings having thin symmetrical biconvex sections with untapered plan forms and various angles of sweepback and aspect ratios. The results are presented in a unified form so that a single chart permits the direct determination of the wave drag for this family of airfoils for an extensive range of aspect ratio and sweepback angle for stream Mach numbers up to a value corresponding to that at which the Mach line coincides with the wing leading edge. The calculations showed that in general the wave-drag coefficient decreased with increasing sweepback" (p. 1).

The results of the yawing-flow tests indicated that the values of the rotary derivatives agreed fairly well with simple sweep theory for a moderate range of lift coefficients.
