The Meta-Lax method of stress reduction in welds. Phase 2 study

This study is the second phase of ongoing research into the mechanics and feasibility of using the Meta-Lax method of vibratory stress relief in place of thermal methods of stress relief. The first phase of this research revealed results that were similar to, and even superior to those achieved using thermal methods. The testing here was designed to eliminate the effects of interbead tempering by utilizing single pass bead-on-plate welds only. A metallurgical explanation for the success of the Meta-Lax method was not found. No significant structure or chemical changes were noted when used with ASTM A36 or AISI 4140 materials, and the phenomena noted in phase I was apparently due to interbead tempering. The theory of accelerated aging has been proposed and studies exist which observed dislocation motion as a result of vibratory treatment. It is evident that the vibratory stress relief system does not impart sufficient energy to bring about the magnitude of change seen with thermal methods. however the physical improvement is a reality, and vibratory methods should be evaluated further.

Emittance, brilliance, and bandpass issues related to an inclined crystal monochromator

The inclined double crystal monochromator arrangement is very effective in handling high heat loads and holds considerable promise as a monochromator for undulator beams at third generation synchrotrons. Results for the ideal inclined crystal case have been obtained by dynamical diffraction calculations, and diffraction results for the (111) reflection of silicon are presented for an inclination angle of 85{degrees} and energies of 5 keV and 13.84 keV. The diffraction characteristics resemble closely diffraction from a symmetric (111) plane of silicon. However, the inclined and noninclined cases are not identical. Diffraction in the inclined case is slightly different due to refraction. The full width at half maximum of the Darwin-Prins reflectivity curve is slightly increased ({approximately} 1%), and the angles of the outgoing beam after one reflection are slightly altered. That is, except for a wave incident at the Laue point in reciprocal space, the diffraction is always slightly asymmetric. The effect can be exactly reversed by an identical second crystal in the (+,-) arrangement.

A total of 139 inventions by private (individual) inventors were submitted to Technology Targeting Incorporated. Each inventor was told of the nature of the DOE-supported Project, through informational and promotional efforts by TTI, and each completed an Invention Submittal Form developed by TTI to describe the essential nature of the claimed invention. Many also submitted detailed descriptions, drawings, technical reports and similar supplemental materials giving a more comprehensive view of their inventions. Each invention was reviewed for technical and commercial merit, as well as for appropriateness of marketing through the Technology Targeting DataBase[trademark] (hereafter DATABASE). Overall, participating inventors were enthusiastic about the Project and felt participation in it was rewording. Even when not selected for marketing, inventors were given an analysis of their inventions which could help them enhance the inventions and improve marketing efforts. Inventors whose inventions were selected for marketing were shown how to professionally market the inventions, including the format for Non Confidential Invention Summaries, the preferred form for Confidential Disclosure Agreements, targeting of business decision-makers responsible for technology evaluation, and the like; some of these inventors are still interacting with industrial contacts provided by TTI through this Project. All inventors received copies of patent abstracts uncovered …

Conventional and fast-kinetics techniques of photochemistry, photophysics, radiation chemistry, and electrochemistry were used to study the intermediates involved in transition metal excited-state electron-transfer reactions. These intermediates were excited state of Ru(II) and Cr(III) photosensitizers, their reduced forms, and species formed in reactions of redox quenchers and electron-transfer agents. Of particular concern was the back electron-transfer reaction between the geminate pair formed in the redox quenching of the photosensitizers, and the dependence of its rate on solution medium and temperature in competition with transformation and cage escape processes. Metastable Enhancement of C[sup +] and O[sup +] Capture Reactions. [10 to 500 eV]

The project is devoted to the study of charge transfer neutralization of Carbon and oxygen ions in H and H[sub 2] gases at energies from 10 to 500 eV. A major motivation was to provide cross section data to support analysis of edge plasmas in Tokamak Fusion devices. The first objective was to measure cross sections for metastable excited singly charged ions separately from the cross sections for ground state ions. Previously published values are confusing because the beams used included unknown fractions of metastables and these metastables have cross sections greatly different from the ground states. The program was fully accomplished, metastable cross sections were found to be over an order of magnitude greater than ones for the ground state and existing discrepancies in the literature were resolved. Considerable effort was devoted to the design and operation of ion source configurations were the metastable content of the ion beam was known. Subsequently study progressed to the neutralization of multiply charged C and 0 ions in the same targets. First there has been a need to develop ion sources which can produce useful beams of multiply charged species. This has now been accomplished. The intent is to use these sources …
