The use of capacitive deionization with carbon aerogel electrodes to remove inorganic contaminants from water (open access)

The use of capacitive deionization with carbon aerogel electrodes to remove inorganic contaminants from water

The capacitive deionization of water with a stack of carbon aerogel electrodes has been successfully demonstrated for the first time. Unlike ion exchange, one of the more conventional deionization processes, no chemicals were required for regeneration of the system. Electricity was used instead. Water with various anions and cations was pumped through the electrochemical cell. After polarization, ions were electrostatically removed from the water and held in the electric double layers formed at electrode surfaces. The water leaving the cell was purified, as desired.

Dose rate calculations for the removal of the mixer pump from Tank 101 SY (open access)

Dose rate calculations for the removal of the mixer pump from Tank 101 SY

Plans are currently being made for the removal of the mixer pump in tank 101 SY. Because the pump is contaminated with radioactive waste, it is essential that those involved in the pump removal operation have an indication of the expected dose rates when the pump is removed. Calculations were made to determine the dose rates for removing the pump, inserting the pump into a shipping container and filling the shipping container with either steel or lead shot for shielding.

Development of the high-level waste high-temperature melter feed preparation flowsheet for vitrification process testing (open access)

Development of the high-level waste high-temperature melter feed preparation flowsheet for vitrification process testing

High-level waste (HLW) feed preparation flowsheet development was initiated in fiscal year (FY) 1994 to evaluate alternative flowsheets for preparing melter feed for high-temperature melter (HTM) vitrification testing. Three flowsheets were proposed that might lead to increased processing capacity relative to the Hanford Waste Vitrification Plant (HWVP) and that were flexible enough to use with other HLW melter technologies. This document describes the decision path that led to the selection of flowsheets to be tested in the FY 1994 small-scale HTM tests. Feed preparation flowsheet development for the HLW HTM was based on the feed preparation flowsheet that was developed for the HWVP. This approach allowed the HLW program to build upon the extensive feed preparation flowsheet database developed under the HWVP Project. Primary adjustments to the HWVP flowsheet were to the acid adjustment and glass component additions. Developmental background regarding the individual features of the HLW feed preparation flowsheets is provided. Applicability of the HWVP flowsheet features to the new HLW vitrification mission is discussed. The proposed flowsheets were tested at the laboratory-scale at Pacific Northwest Laboratory. Based on the results of this testing and previously established criteria, a reductant-based flowsheet using glycolic acid and a nitric acid-based flowsheet …

Model documentation: Natural gas transmission and distribution model of the National Energy Modeling System. Volume 1 (open access)

Model documentation: Natural gas transmission and distribution model of the National Energy Modeling System. Volume 1

The Natural Gas Transmission and Distribution Model (NGTDM) is the component of the National Energy Modeling System (NEMS) that is used to represent the domestic natural gas transmission and distribution system. NEMS was developed in the Office of integrated Analysis and Forecasting of the Energy information Administration (EIA). NEMS is the third in a series of computer-based, midterm energy modeling systems used since 1974 by the EIA and its predecessor, the Federal Energy Administration, to analyze domestic energy-economy markets and develop projections. The NGTDM is the model within the NEMS that represents the transmission, distribution, and pricing of natural gas. The model also includes representations of the end-use demand for natural gas, the production of domestic natural gas, and the availability of natural gas traded on the international market based on information received from other NEMS models. The NGTDM determines the flow of natural gas in an aggregate, domestic pipeline network, connecting domestic and foreign supply regions with 12 demand regions. The methodology employed allows the analysis of impacts of regional capacity constraints in the interstate natural gas pipeline network and the identification of pipeline capacity expansion requirements. There is an explicit representation of core and noncore markets for natural …

Oak Ridge Reservation volume I. Y-12 mercury task force files: A guide to record series of the Department of Energy and its contractors

The purpose of this guide is to describe each of the series of records identified in the documents of the Y-12 Mercury Task Force Files that pertain to the use of mercury in the separation and enrichment of lithium isotopes at the Department of Energy`s (DOE) Y-12 Plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. History Associates Incorporated (HAI) prepared this guide as part of DOE`s Epidemiologic Records Inventory Project, which seeks to verify and conduct inventories of epidemiologic and health-related records at various DOE and DOE contractor sites. This introduction briefly describes the Epidemiologic Records Inventory Project and HAI`s role in the project. Specific attention will be given to the history of the DOE-Oak Ridge Reservation, the development of the Y-12 Plant, and the use of mercury in the production of nuclear weapons during the 1950s and early 1960s. This introduction provides background information on the Y-12 Mercury Task Force Files, an assembly of documents resulting from the 1983 investigation of the Mercury Task Force into the effects of mercury toxicity upon workplace hygiene and worker health, the unaccountable loss of mercury, and the impact of those losses upon the environment. This introduction also explains the methodology used in the selection and …

Initial Experience to Determine the Solubility of Salts in Low-Level Mix Waste Glasses (open access)

Initial Experience to Determine the Solubility of Salts in Low-Level Mix Waste Glasses

Glass may be used to immobilize low-level mixed waste (LLMW) at the Savannah River Site because of its ability to accept a wide variety of components into its network structure. However, many common salts (sulfates, chlorides, phosphates, and chromates) present in the LLMW streams have limited solubility in glass. Processing and product problems may arise if the solubility of these salts is exceeded. In an effort to determine the factors that most affect salt solubilities, a statistical screening experiment was performed. The screening experiment, a Plackett-Burman design, allowed efficient estimation of the effects of variables, such as the composition of the glass, the temperature of the melt, the duration of melting, and the cooling rate. Each of these factors, along with a combination of sulfate, chloride, phosphate and chromate concentrations, were examined to provide an estimate of the solubility of each salt. The results of the screening experiment were interpreted to determine which variables should be further examined. The composition of the glass, especially the concentrations of boron, calcium and the alkalis, was found to have the greatest effect on the solubilities of the salts. This paper will discuss the results of the screening experiment and describe a path forward.

Final report of fugitive and diffuse emissions evaluations at the Hanford Site, CY 1994 (open access)

Final report of fugitive and diffuse emissions evaluations at the Hanford Site, CY 1994

The objective of this study was to evaluate several of Hanford`s major diffuse emission sources and evaluate the effectiveness of monitoring these sources individually versus collectively. The results from this evaluation may also be utilized to demonstrate Westinghouse`s compliance status with the applicable air emissions regulations and determine if additional studies and/or evaluations are necessary. Air sampling results from four waste handling and storage facilities were collected for a one week period and analyzed. The following is a list of the selected sampling sites: Plutonium Finishing Plant; 241-BY Tank Farm; 1301-N Trench; 300 Area Trenches and North Ponds. These sites were chosen as being representative of most of the Hanford waste sites, which are known to be diffuse emission sites. The sites were evaluated on the following criteria: physical size, surface contamination levels, geology, vegetation density, surface cover, potential for occupational exposure, and potential for public exposure. The selected sites vary greatly with the selection criteria parameters, and as a result should provide representative data for most of Hanford`s waste sites.
