Uranium solubility studies during waste evaporation (open access)

Uranium solubility studies during waste evaporation

The liquid waste streams from chemical processing of reactor-irradiated targets and fuel are neutralized with excess NaOH and discharged to mild steel waste tanks for interim storage. To reduce the number of tanks required, and thus the cost of waste storage, the supernate is evaporated to about 70% solids, discharged while hot into clean waste tanks. As the solution cools, solids crystallize from the saturated solution and form a solid layer on the bottom of the tank. The supernate is re-evaporated to concentrate the volume further. Evaporation and crystallization are continued until, for tank 41, the tank is almost filled with crystallized salts. In the DWPF processing scheme, these salts will be redissolved in water and {sup 137}Cs precipitated with sodium tetraphenylborate in the in-tank precipitation facility. The decontaminated supernate is now mixed with cement and stored as a solid monolith; the precipitated Cs and the base-insoluble solids are encapsulated in glass for permanent storage. Questions have been raised about the nuclear safety of these operations, particularly for tank 41, where the waste source was waste from the H-Area fuel processing. One scenario for a potential nuclear accident considers that the salts in tank 41 would dissolve in water, but …

Iron yoke eddy current induced losses with application to the ALS septum magnets (open access)

Iron yoke eddy current induced losses with application to the ALS septum magnets

The theoretical development of relations governing the eddy current induced losses in iron electromagnet yokes is reviewed. A baseline laminated electromagnet design is analyzed and a parametric study illustrates the sensitivity of core losses to perturbations of various geometrical, material, and excitation parameters. Core losses and field gradients for the ALS septum magnets are calculated. Design modifications capable of eliminating transverse and longitudinal field gradients are discussed.

Demonstration testing and evaluation of in situ soil heating. Revision 1, Demonstration system design (open access)

Demonstration testing and evaluation of in situ soil heating. Revision 1, Demonstration system design

Over the last nine years IIT Research Institute (IITRI) has been developing and testing the in situ heating and soil decontamination process for the remediation of soils containing hazardous organic contaminants. In this process the soil is heated in situ using electrical energy. The contaminants are removed from the soil due to enhanced vaporization, steam distillation and stripping. The vaporized contaminants, water vapor and air are recovered from the heated zone by means of a vacuum manifold system which collects gases from below surface as well as from the soil surface. A vapor barrier is used to prevent fugitive emissions of the contaminants and to control air infiltration to minimize dilution of the contaminant gases and vapors. The recovered gases and vapors are conveyed to an on site vapor treatment system for the clean up of the vent gases. Electrical energy is applied to the soil by forming an array of electrodes in the soil which are electrically interconnected and supplied with power. The electrodes are placed in drilled bore holes which are made through the contaminated zone. There are two versions of the in situ heating and soil treatment process: the f irst version is called the In Situ …

The CO-OP Guide (open access)

The CO-OP Guide

You are at D0, the newest and most advanced experiment at Fermilab. Its goal is to find the 'top quark', nicknamed 'truth'. theoretically one of the six fundamental building blocks of matter. Combinations of the six quarks are said to make up electrons, protons and neutrons. Your group at D0 is the cryogenic division. Its goal is to provide and maintain a cryogenic system which ultimately supplies and controls the liquid argon used in the giant cryostats for the experiment. The high purity liquid argon is needed to keep the detector modules inside the cryostats cold, so that they will operate properly. Your job at D0 is to be a co-op for the research and development group of the cryogenics division. Your goals are dependent on the needs of the cryo group. D0 is where you will spend most of your time. The co-op office is located on what is known as the 3rd floor, but is actually on the ground floor. The floor directly above the 3rd floor is the 5th floor, which contains your immediate superiors and the D0 secretary. The 6th and top floor is above that, and contains the D0 secretary for official and important business. …
