Preconceptual design management plan basalt waste isolation program basalt repository

The repository in Columbia Plateau basalt will receive nuclear waste in canisters (spent fuel, HLW, and ILW) and drums (low-level waste). This document establishes the management plan for the preconceptual design of the basalt repository. (DLC)

40-kW field test power plant modification and development. Monthly technical status report No. 13, September 16, 1978-October 15, 1978 (open access)

40-kW field test power plant modification and development. Monthly technical status report No. 13, September 16, 1978-October 15, 1978

The contract objective is to complete the design and development actions that upgrade the 40-kW fuel cell power plant to a configuration suitable for on-site demonstration testing. The modifications will improve operating capability, durability and maintenance interval and lead to reduced production costs. Equipment to recover and use the by-product heat of electric generation will be available on the power plant for field verification of on-site heat recovery. The 40-kW power plant will be compatible with the power characteristics required for conventional heat pumps and conventional 60 Hz, 120/208 volts electrically operated equipment. Progress is reported. (WHK)

Unconventional gas: Report on a focus group discussion (open access)

Unconventional gas: Report on a focus group discussion

three separate technologies were discussed but, because of the background of the discussants, the greater part of the discussion focused on geopressure aquifers. In general, there was considerable agreement with regard to the level and types of technological and economic uncertainty, the institutional barriers, and the role that the federal government should take in enhancing commercialization. The resource is considered to be vast and if the market were allowed to operate freely the demand for the gas would be considerable. It was estimated that in a free market an annual demand of up to 30 trillion cubic feet could be expected in the near future. The industry representatives think that the market demand would be greater than estimates compiled by the government because those demand estimates were influenced downward by assumptions of relatively constrained supply. It was agreed that the economic incentives available to industrry, given the current regulation of price, are not sufficient to induce significant risk captial into well drilling in search of geopressurized gas. A common industry position is that the government needs to provide front-end funds to at least assist in well drillings, or for additional research within existing wells. The goal of this research would …

Utility plans for utilization of geothermal energy in California (open access)

Utility plans for utilization of geothermal energy in California

Early in 1976, JPL conducted a survey of California utilities to ascertain their views on the probable rate of geothermal development in the State of California in the immediate future (Reference 1). At the time the survey was conducted, the only firm utility plans for geothermal generating capacity were for the Geysers dry steam field in Northern California; experimental work on utilization of the hot water fields of the Imperial Valley was in its early stages. All of the utilities contacted indicated a willingness to consider geothermal energy as an alternative to gas- and oil-fired plants, but most emphasized that their prime reliance would be on nuclear power to meet future demand growth. Over the ten-year period 1976-1986, they foresaw a maximum of 2500 MW of geothermal capacity coming on-line, and, of this, 2150 NW was at The Geysers (see Figure 1). Since that survey was conducted, a number of new factors have entered the utility planning picture. Most significant has been the hardening of attitudes in the State against the installation of nuclear plants, and the emphasis on seeking alternative energy sources. Two major nuclear projects, Sundesert and San Joaquin, have been abandoned, and the passage of stiff regulatory …
