Investigation of the physical and chemical properties of polonium important to its behavior and for the improvement of the quantity and quality produced is being continued. A sample of polonium is approximatelyf 1 x 10{sup 9} disintegrations per minute was counted in a Logac for 250 days in order to determine the half life. A statistical treatment of the results gave a half life of 138.3562 {+-} 0.446 days. Combined with previous calorimetric determinations a new grand mean of 138.3975 {+-} 0.0091 days resulted. The wavelengths of 138 lines appearing in the spark spectrum between 3050A and 3463A (Region 4) have been tentatively assigned to polonium and have a probable error of less than 0.02A. Thirty six lines in Region 6 (4225A to 5675A) tentatively assigned to polonium have a probable error of less than D D6A. A measurement of the resistivity of polonium has given a value of about 95 microohm centimeters, and although the Hall voltage could not be measured with much precision, it was possible to set a maximum value of 0.03 millivolt. The following report measures a shield mockup in three regions: the first made almost entire of iron; the second, transition, region is made of various thicknesses of B4C; and the third region was borated water. The iron samples used in the experiments were made in the form of rectangular plates and place in the lid tank; however, the plates were not completely flat and created a water gap that was measured in this report.

Available literature applicable to the problem of aircraft fire hazards is analyzed and discussed herein. Data pertaining to the effect of many variables on ignition temperatures, minimum ignition pressures, and minimum spark-ignition energies of inflammables, quenching distances of electrode configurations, and size of openings incapable of flame propagation are presented and discussed."

Note presenting a simplified extension of the Prandtl-Glauert compressibility correction for isolated airfoils, which was obtained for airfoils in cascade with axial air inlet by considering the total lift coefficient of a cascade to be composed of the sum of two components. Results regarding theoretical variations, experimental correlation, and design application are provided.

Report presenting the formulas of supersonic wing theory for source, doublet, and vortex distributions, and a systematic presentation is provided which relates these distributions to the pressure and to the vertical induced velocity in the plane of the wing. Care must be used in treating the singularities involved in the analysis and that the order of integration is not always reversible. Certain special applications are included to illustrate the concepts presented.

Report presenting flow surveys in the second of several nozzles to be investigated in the 11-inch hypersonic tunnel. The single-stage, two-dimensional nozzle was designed by the method of characteristics for a Mach number of 7.08 without boundary-layer corrections. Results regarding the variation of flow properties with time, variation of flow parameters with settling-chamber pressure, calibration surveys, and general discussion of the nozzle characteristics are provided.

From Summary: "The syntheses of five alkyldiphenylmethane hydrocarbons, 2-methyldiphenylmethane, 3-methyldiphenylmethane, 2-ethyldiphenylmethane, 4-ethyldiphenylmethane, and 4-isoropyldiphenylmethane are described. The preparation of these hydrocarbons was based on the reaction of the appropriate arylmagnesium halides with benzaldehyde to yield the corresponding alkylbenzhydrols, which were subsequently converted to the hydrocarbons by hydrogenolysis."
