The Theme of Isolation in the Novels of Daniel Defoe (open access)

The Theme of Isolation in the Novels of Daniel Defoe

It is the purpose of this paper to illustrate from the novels themselves that Defoe's protagonists are essentially isolated individuals and that this isolation is the result of the circumstances of their births, the nature of their professions, their spiritually isolating religious beliefs, and their attitudes toward their fellow men.

A Comparison of Christopher Marlowe's Edward II and William Shakespeare's Richard II (open access)

A Comparison of Christopher Marlowe's Edward II and William Shakespeare's Richard II

This study purports to examine several areas of similarity between the chronicle history plays by Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. Edward II and Richard II are alike in many ways, most strikingly in the similarity of the stories themselves. But this is a superficial likeness, for there are many other likenesses--in purpose, in artistry, in language--which demonstrate more clearly than the parallel events of history the remarkable degree to which these plays resemble each other.

Selective Lipid Absorption (open access)

Selective Lipid Absorption

An experiment was designed to study in the same animal any preferential absorption of a free fatty acid in the presence of a triglyceride of the same fatty acid. Rats were administered a mixture of free fatty acid and its triglyceride labeled with carbon-13 and carbon-14 respectively. Each isotope in the fed lipid and in the lipid recovered from the gastrointestinal tract was measured. The isotope effect, if any, was studied by administering a mixture of palmitic acid-1-C13 and palmitic acid-1-C14.

A Comparison of Physics and Psychology Majors on FIRO-B Variables (open access)

A Comparison of Physics and Psychology Majors on FIRO-B Variables

It is the basic assumption of this study that a relationship exists between the interpersonal needs of inclusion, control, and affection and occupational choice as indicated by college major. Studies in the area of vocational choice have largely dealt with people who are practicing the vocation, leaving doubt as to whether people are attracted to the vocation as a result of need-satisfaction behavior, or whether the people determine their orientation by practicing the occupation. The need for further clarification of these questions was recognized, and this study was an effort to add to the evidence for or against the validity of the concept of interpersonal need satisfaction as a factor in vocational choice.

The Confederate Naval Department and its Operation at New Orleans

Many books have been written on the battles of the Civil War. Most of these deal only with engagements between the armies; little has been written concerning the Confederate Navy. Yet the struggles of the Confederate Navy cannot be overlooked in determining why, after so many victorious battles in the field, the Confederacy still failed to defeat the Union.

A System for Measurement of Negative-Ion Charge-Exchange Cross Sections (open access)

A System for Measurement of Negative-Ion Charge-Exchange Cross Sections

A radio-frequency positive-ion source and a fifty-kilovolt linear accelerator were designed and constructed in order to produce sizable quantities of hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, neon, and argon. Plans were then made to equip this ion source with charge-exchange apparatus suitable for charge-exchange cross-sectional measurements. It is the purpose of this paper to present the design of the equipment and to present operational knowledge of the equipment and of ion beams which are producible.

Topological Groups (open access)

Topological Groups

The notion of a topological group follows naturally from a combination of the properties of a group and a topological space. Since a group consists of a set G of elements which may be either finite or infinite and since this is also common to a topological space, a question is opened as to whether or not it is possible to assign a topology to a set of elements which form a group under a certain operation. Now it is possible to assign a topology to any set of elements if no restriction is placed on the topology assigned and hence this study would be of little value from the standpoint of the group itself. If however it is required that the group operation be continuous in the topological space then a very interesting theory is developed.

Tactical Operations of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron in the Civil War (open access)

Tactical Operations of the West Gulf Blockading Squadron in the Civil War

Of the large amount of writings concerning the Civil War only a small percentage pertains to the Federal Navy's role. This is understandable since this was primarily a land war. A few of the Navy's exploits such as the capture of New Orleans, the sinking of the Alabama, the capture of the Florida in Brazilian waters, and the Trent affair received great amounts of publicity, but the majority of the naval activities were of a routine nature, each individually warranting little notice but collectively contributing immensely to the final Federal victory. The purpose of this paper is to show in detail the role of only a portion of the Navy, the West Gulf Blockading Squadron, during this struggle.
