Longitudinal Dispersion in Beds of Finely Divided Solids (open access)

Longitudinal Dispersion in Beds of Finely Divided Solids

Experimental determinations of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient and the Peclet number were made for three binary gas systems. The experimental technique involved measuring the dispersion of a step function input to a column packed with glass beads. The diffusional model was employed to obtain the differential equation describing longitudinal dispersion in a packed column. This equation was solved with suitable boundary conditions, and the solution was used in the analysis of the experimental dispersion data. The experimental results show a variation in the Peclet number from 0.1 to 0.6, and in the eddy dispersion coefficient from 0.03 to 1.0 cm/sup 2//sec for the Reynolds number range from 0.03 to 1.0. The Two-Pion Exchange Contribution to the Higher Partial Waves of Nucleon- Nucleon Scattering (open access)

The Two-Pion Exchange Contribution to the Higher Partial Waves of Nucleon- Nucleon Scattering

By means of the Mandelstam representation, expressions are obtained for the two-pion-exchange contributions to the higher partial waves of N-N scattering. A set of ten invariant amplitudes is selected, of which each member obeys the Mandelstam representation. Dispersion relations are written for the amplitudes in which the discontinuities are absorptive parts for N-bar-N scattering. By means of the unitarity condition the absorptive parts are expressed as a partial- wave expansion in terms of the pi pi - NN partialwave amplitudes of Frazer and Fulco, except for the contributions of the pole in the pi -N system which are treated exactly in order to ensure better convergence of the partial-wave expansion. The N-N transition amplitudes in the angular-momentum representation are expressed in terms of the invariant amplitudes. (auth)

A Mass-Spectrometric Investigation of Sulfur Vapor as a Function of Temperature (open access)

A Mass-Spectrometric Investigation of Sulfur Vapor as a Function of Temperature

A mass-spectrometric investigation was performed on sulfur vapor in equilibrium with the condensed phase at 120 to 210 gas-cooled C. It was found that, in this temperature range, equilibrium sulfur vapor contains appreciable quantities of S/sub 8/, S/sub 7/, S/sub 6/, and S/sub 5/ only. The sulfur vapor emanated as a small well-collimated molecular beam from a specially constructed source into an ionization chamber which was designed to exclude from analysis any sulfur vapor that had impinged on the walls or the hot electron filament. Essential identical ionization potentials were determined for S/sub 8/ , S/sub 7/, S/sub 6/, and S/sub 5/ of 9.8 0.4 ev. The heat of vaporizati on of S/sub 7/ was calculated to be approximately 2.5 kcal greater than that of S/ sub 8/. Upper limits for S/sub 8/ and S/sub 7/ composition in S vapor at 120 gas- cooled C were determined to be 86% and 14%, respectively. It is proposed thst S/sub 8/ is the vaporizing species, that S/sub 7/, S/sub 6/, and S/sub 5/ result from dissociation of S/sub 8/. and that all four molecules have a ring configuration. (auth)

Fractional Crystallization From Melts (open access)

Fractional Crystallization From Melts

S>Studies of the separation process known as zone melting were enclosed in 5 to 10 mm glass tubes and pulled through a stationary heater, which generated a liquid zone. The separation increased as the zone travel rate decreased, as the size of the tube increased, and as the difference in liquid density between the belk solid and the freezing interface increased. It was also found that, for vertical tubes, the separation was much greater when the fluid of lower density Between the buld zone and the freezing interface) was on the bottom the When it was on the top. Insertion of an axial thbe or rod of metal or glass into the zone also increased the separation. A correlation was developed which enables estimation of the separation for various - sithations in zone melting, Equations and principles were developed which enable estimation of the thermal requirements for zone melting and a theoretical study of pure diffusional mass transfer in some melting was also made. A general expression for concentration profiles was derived for materials with a constant distribution coefficient and a method for the rapid estimation of these concentration profiles was developed, Numerical results for eutectic-forming systems were obtained, and …

Self-diffusion of Pb210 and Cl36 in Molten PbCl2-KCl Mixtures in the Region of the Compound 2PbCl2-KCl (open access)

Self-diffusion of Pb210 and Cl36 in Molten PbCl2-KCl Mixtures in the Region of the Compound 2PbCl2-KCl

The specific goal of the investigation was the measurement, as a function of temperature, of the self-diffusion coefficients of Pb210 and Cl36 in PbCl2-KCl compositions in the region of the first compound, and to calculate from these data the activation energy necessary for the diffusion of these ions.

A New Approach to Teaching Grammar in the Ninth Grade

By presenting first, statement of theory, and then concrete examples and original exercises, wherever practical, this thesis suggests possible ways to combine linguistic methods with traditional ones to make a more effective approach to teaching language in the ninth grade.

T-Functions (open access)

T-Functions

The main purpose of this paper is to make a detailed study of a certain class T of complex functions. The functions of the class T have a special mapping property and are meromorphic in every region. As an application of this study, certain elementary functions are defined and studied in terms of a special T-function.

An Analysis of Junior Executive Training Programs in Department Stores in Texas (open access)

An Analysis of Junior Executive Training Programs in Department Stores in Texas

The problem was to determine the significance of various relationships between job-performance ratings and selected factors associated with the college curricula of junior executive trainees. Job-performance ratings were made by personnel directors and immediate supervisors of college graduates enrolled as participants in junior executive training programs in department stores in Texas.

The Serenades and Divertimenti of Mozart (open access)

The Serenades and Divertimenti of Mozart

This study has two divisions: Part I, an historical and analytical summary of the emergence and development of the divertimento and the serenade in the eighteenth century, and Part II, the culmination of these structures in the works of W. A. Mozart. Two primary purposes are envisioned: 1) to further our knowledge of how German Gesellshafts-musik evolved toward its peak in the second half of the eighteenth century, and 2) to furnish a useful analytical handbook of Mozart's works in these genres.

An In-Service Educational Program for Beginning Teachers of Spanish in the Elementary Grades (open access)

An In-Service Educational Program for Beginning Teachers of Spanish in the Elementary Grades

The problem of the study was to determine the effectiveness of an in-service education program as a means of providing qualified foreign language teachers for elementary schools. Specifically, the problem was concerned with a statistical comparison of the achievement of two groups of pupils. One group was composed of fourth-grade pupils who were taught Spanish by teachers who had had a maximum of three college hours in Spanish and who had participated in an in-service education program. The other group was composed of fourth-grade pupils whose teachers had had a minimum of twelve college hours in Spanish but had not participated in an in-service education program.

The Genio-Hyoid Vocal Interference (open access)

The Genio-Hyoid Vocal Interference

Both science and empirical knowledge seem to indicate that anatomical considerations relating to potential muscular interference be established at the incipiency of the serious study of voice. Experience shows that if this aspect of vocal development is not pursued with utmost diligence, an early deterioration of the vocal instrument is possible many years before a normal expectancy. It has been discovered, also, that the study of articulation, pronunciation, modulation, emphasis, gestures and interpretation seem to avoid, primarily, the necessity of muscular training, per. This thesis will not include, in detail, the aspects of the use of the breath, except in a perfunctory manner. The same can be said of resonance and diction. It will endeavor, however, to indicate the muscular differences of the singing and swallowing actions. Furthermore, it will advance some suggestions for the avoidance of constrictive muscular influences which might impede the singing musculature. Finally, a phonatory process will be presented for consideration as a muscular mechanism to be made operative in connection with a direct control procedure.
