The Serenade for Viola and Orchestra is a one-movement composition of three connecting sections with two main themes of contrasting character. The "relatedness" of the sections does not depend on common thematic material, but rather on a system whereby motives evolve out of the thematic material and from elements in preceding sections. The sonorous timbre of the viola is exploited and becomes the central tessitura for the piece. The title is representative of the lyrical nature of the composition as a whole, especially the first and third section.

The first movement material is presented by the ensemble and subsequently developed by the saxophone. A majority of the saxophone passages are supported by the ensemble with unaccompanied solo passages kept to a minimum. The various sections are based more on differences in pitch and rhythm than orchestration and harmony.

It's All in the Cards is an instrumental chamber work consisting of three movements for ten percussionists encircling the audience. The total duration of the piece is approximately thirteen minutes. Much of the rhythmic and melodic material, as well as the form, was determined by shuffling and dealing a standard deck of fifty-two cards. Other computational procedures have been used to achieve the effect of sound moving from one spatial location to another, an effect on which must be regarded as an essential factor in performance of the work.

Symphony Number Five is a composition in three movements for orchestra. It is characterized by an economy of materials and a clarity of presentation of those materials. Further, the materials are expressed in a simplistic manner which avoids intricate textural content and complex melodic and harmonic structures. The symphony was chosen as a pattern of structure for this composition since it represents a microcosm of the history and development of musical style since 1760.

The compositional goals strived for in this work are (1) to unify the past and present, (2) to present a rhythmically simple but harmonically complex use of the voices, (3) to explore the timbral complexities of voices and instruments, (4) to explore rhythmic changes without changing meters, (5) to integrate the orchestra and chorus so as to produce one musical entity rather than two opposing groups, (6) to produce a work that is both practicable in performance and contemporary in spirit.

This theater piece is based on a story by John Updike. It is scored for baritone soloist, chorus, real-time electronic sounds, and a small orchestra (woodwinds 1111, brass 2121, 2 percussionists, organ, handbells, strings 33221). The work also includes actors, dancers, video projections, 35mm slide projections, and special lighting effects. The story opens with the moving of fourteen-year old David and his family is to live on the farm formerly owned by David's maternal grandfather. David becomes disturbed when he reads H.G. Wells account of the life of Jesus Christ, He reacts to this account because it is contradictory in spirit to what he has been taught at church and at home. The story deals primarily with David's attempts to reconcile these conflicts in his mind.

String Music is a composition for string orchestra, percussion, and tape in three movements. The work exploits both traditional and contemporary polyphonic techniques (e.g. imitation, inversion, canon, stretto, fugue, collage). In addition, each movement employs a different musical elementas the focus of organization (timbre, pitch, rhythm/meter). The duration of the entire work is approximately eighteen and a half minutes.

The History of Horn Playing in Los Angeles from 1920 to 1970 begins with the horn players who played in the silent film orchestras and the Alfred Brain's tenure with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This study details the introduction of soundtracks, the early studio orchestras, the contract studio orchestras, the musician union's role in structuring the work environment, the horn players who played in both the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the studios, major figures from the subsequent freelance period such as Vincent de Rosa, and the local and international influence of the Los Angeles Horn Club.

Document accompanying a transcription for solo euphonium and large brass ensemble of three arias, "Ecco ridente in cielo," "Largo al factotum," and "A un dottor della mia sorte," from Gioacchino Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville. Includes overviews of the arias' texts and contexts, orchestrational techniques in the transcriptions, the history and definition of the term "euphonium," and the history of the large brass ensemble in the United States.

A large, multi-basin reservoir (Garza-Little Elm Reservoir) in north central Texas was studied to determine the relative effects of various parameters on primary productivity. The basins were impounded several years apart, thus allowing the influence of age on water chemistry and biota to be considered. Another principal influence on water quality was secondary sewage effluent that entered one basin from a nearby source.

The underlying problem of the thesis is elucidating the relationship between the art object and philosophy. The thesis is organized into an introduction and four chapters. The introduction poses the need for a philosophical approach to the art object, and the phenomological method is briefly described. The first chapter defines and describes two basic structures found in the art object. The second chapter probes into the ontological structure of the art object in terms of form and media. The third chapter focuses on the relation of form and media evident in personal art works. The fourth chapter summarizes the content of preceding chapters and describes the relationship between the art object and the phenomological method, and discusses the significance of this relationship to philosophy and mankind.

The problem of this study was to prepare a comprehensive family living textbook for use by high school students. The primary purposes of the study were the following: (1) to provide teenagers with factual information concerning sexuality which will better equip them to make responsible decisions; (2) to prepare young people to become better marriage partners, better parents and ultimately to produce stronger families for the future.

Following achievement of statehood, Texas militiamen served in the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the Spanish-American War. As the twentieth century began, Texans had a long history of service in reserve military organizations in spite of a prevailing attitude of contempt for citizen soldiers held by influential regular army officials.

Several researchers have suggested that fluctuating estrogen levels may be responsible for certain physiological changes in the female body. The purpose of this study was to determine whether significant changes in the soprano voice quality occur due to the use of oral contraceptives.

Light and electron microscopy were employed to study the encystment and germination processes in Azotobacter. Data obtained from frozen-etched replicas and chemically fixed cells revealed that as encystment occurs, the cells become rounded, and lose their motility.

This study was conducted to compare changes in self-concept and dogmatism among high school subjects at three levels of manifest anxiety following group vocational counseling. The related literature includes studies of anxiety as it affects self-concept, dogmatism, and group activities. Studies of the relationship between self-concept and dogmatism are also reported.

The attachment and/or penetration of animal cells by two strains of Legionella pneumophila was studied in three vertebrae cell lines in vitro . The study focused on (1) differences in attachment and penetration between the two bacterial strains (an environmental isolate, Johannesburg-2, and a clinical isolate, Chicago-8) and between the cell lines (Hep-2, WI-38 and a murine line); (2) effects of L. pneumophila on cell morphology and growth; and (3) the effects of pyruvate and six sugars or sugar derivatives (D-mannose, D-Galactose, D-Glucose, L-glucose, D-fructose, and 2-deoxy-D-glucose).

The purpose of this oral interpretation thesis is to explore Chamber Theatre as a medium for production. John Cheever and his work are analyzed, an explanation of Chamber Threatre is given, and Cheever's short story "The Country Husband" is adapted in Chamber Theatre script form, and a public performance is rehearsed and presented. It was discovered that students gain critical insight and understanding of narrative fiction through Chamber Theatre script form, and a public performance is rehearsed and presented. This study is devoted to a critical examination of the architectural structure and sculpture of the church of San Cayetano de La Valenciana in Guanajuato, Mexico, concentrating on the ornamentation of the exterior portals and the interior altar retables. This paper traces the development of the Churrigueresque phase within the Baroque period of Mexican religious architecture and analyzes specific application of this style to the church of La Valenciana. Stylistic and iconographic components are discussed and a review of significant literature on this subject is included.

The purpose of the study was to write a history of the professional career of D. O. Wiley as a music educator from 1921 to 1963. To give focus to the career of Wiley, answers were sought to three questions, stated as sub-problems: (1) What were the important events and influences in the professional career of D. O. Wiley as a college/University band director? (2) What impact did Wiley have on the development of Texas public school bands that earned him the title "Father of Texas Bands?" and (3) What role did Wiley play in the development of the Texas Music Educators Association and other professional music organizations.

Nineteen laboratory strains of Azotobacter vinelandii and two organisms of the same species isolated from water samples were screened for the presence of plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Three laboratory strains and both organisms isolated from water samples contained one plasmid each. The migration distances of the plasmids in agarose gel electrophoresis were different molecular weights. The plasmids were cured by SDS or ethidium bromide treatment of the cultures.

The purpose of this study was to isolate a relatively pure population of granules from the DF and SR of 7 day old rats and characterize them biochemically. If this could be accomplished, the next step was to determine if the granule proteins may play a role in tooth eruption.

Brain-reactive antibodies (BRA) increase in frequency with age in several mammalian species and may be involved in the pathogenesis of age-related dementia. In this experiment, the molecular specificity of BRA in mouse sera was determined using an immunoblot assay, and the relationship of BRA to longevity was studied by comparing the rate of formation of specific BRAs in diet restricted C57BL/6NNia, B6D2F1/NNia, and DBA/2NNia, genotypes which differ markedly in life-span.
