[Governor's Mansion view from the old Capitol building]

Photograph of the Texas Governor's Mansion from the site of the old Capitol building looking at the West and north elevations of the Governor's Manstion, grounds, street, barn and picket fence. The mansion was built by Abner Cook in 1855 and was continuously occupied since 1856. The occupant here in 1874 was Governor Richard Coke. The mansion was declared a Texas historical landmark in 1962 and a national historic landmark in 1970.

[Portrait of Sarah L. Slaughter Rankin]

Photograph of Sarah L. Slaughter Rankin (Mrs. John M. Rankin) (1818-1886). The portrait shows the sitter in a three-quarter pose from head to waist, and it is mounted on a carte de visite. Her hair is parted and pulled back behind her ears. She is wearing a dark dress with buttons up the front and a lace collar pinned at her neck. The photographer's imprint on the back of the card is: "J. H. Webster, Photograph Galleries, Marshall and Jefferson, Texas." Mrs. Rankin was a teacher in the private school run by her husband in San Augustine, Texas, in 1837 and 1838.
