A comparison of the academic achievements of seventh grade students in the semester unit plan with those in the quarter unit plan

The problem with which this dissertation is concerned is to determine whether the semester unit plan offers seventh grade students greater academic gain in the basic subject areas than does the quarter unit plan. Texas offers school districts a choice of the two plans. This study is unique in that the district of this study has both plans in operation at the secondary level.

The attitude of the sixty-fourth Texas legislators towards serving the severely and profoundly handicapped and handicapped infants below the age of three

The problem of this study was to determine the degree of Texas Legislative support for public school services to handicapped children not presently being served (birth through two and zero reject). This study has four purposes: To identify trends in respect to educating the handicapped birth through two and zero-reject; To determine State Legislative's attitude with respect to serving; To inform the legislature and educational leaders and familiarize them with the data collected; and to present recommendations to legislators, educators, and agencies of strategies that might be considered in future planning.

Water imagery and the baptism motif in Beowulf (open access)

Water imagery and the baptism motif in Beowulf

Functioning on three distinct but coexistent levels, water imagery unifies Beowulf. On the first level, that of conscious symbolism, Beowulf's three water adventures develop the triple immersion motif present in Anglo-Saxon baptism ritual. On the second level, that of the poet's personal unconscious, the water monsters against whom Beowulf struggles symbolize the hero's Shadow, his fallen nature in which lurk inadmissable and anarchic desires. On the deepest level, that of the port's collective unconscious, the water monsters are symbols for the archetypal Mother to whose womb the hero of myth strives to return in order to achieve immortality by means of rebirth.

Environmental Pollution, Material Scarcity and the Development of Aluminum Recycling Reverse Channels of Distribution (open access)

Environmental Pollution, Material Scarcity and the Development of Aluminum Recycling Reverse Channels of Distribution

The purpose of this study was to analyze the developing organizational and management paradigms in the aluminum packaging and container industry, where reverse channels of distribution offer an excellent vehicle for studying organizations which are "closing the distribution circle." Based on the analysis, several conclusions are offered. 1. The extent to which primary manufacturers have entered aluminum packaging and container recycling and subsequently developed effective reverse channels of distribution is contingent upon needs for resources. 2. The most successful recycling programs are those which have decentralized organizations. 3. Central to beverage producers' decisions to develop extensive reverse channels of distribution is the belief that recycling is (1) a deterrent to container legislation, (2) a source of favorable publicity, (3) a source of company profits, and (4) can improve supply relationships with primary aluminum suppliers. 4. Regional beverage companies in the environmentally conscious Far West have the most successful and comprehensive recycling operations. 5. Loose organizational federations such as those of the soft drink franchise do not seem amenable to the development of reverse channels of distribution. 6. Where i t serves the needs of the enterprise, firms are developing sophisticated and efficient reverse channels of distribution. The institution of reverse …

Studies of the Mechanisms of Reactions of Binary Metal Carbonyls (open access)

Studies of the Mechanisms of Reactions of Binary Metal Carbonyls

A kinetic study of the reactions of Group VI-B hexacarbonyls with primary amine and halide ligands was undertaken in order to determine the possible mechanisms of these reactions. As well as the expected dissociative pathway, the reactions with the primary amines were seen to proceed by a concurrent pathway which was dependent upon the ligand concentration. Since nitrogen donor ligands are expected to be poor donor ligands, the mechanism proposed was a "dissociative interchange" mechanism which should not be too dependent upon the nucleophilicity of the ligand. Comparison of the rate constants for the amines studied as well as those of the previously investigated Lewis base ligands indicated all such reactions may proceed through the same mechanism. The similarity in rate constants for the ligand-independent and ligand-dependent pathways supports this mechanism. The rate of formation of the final product was seen to be dependent upon the square of the mercuric halide concentration. Therefore, the conversion of Fe(CO)4(HgX)2 to the final product was proposed to proceed by the successive abstraction by each HgX group of two molecules of mercuric halide. These oxidative elimination reactions are related to a chemical model for the intermediate step in the reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia …

This study is concerned with the motets in an important manuscript of polyphonic music of the first third of the fifteenth century. Although the book appears to have been written in northern Italy around 1430-1433, some of the motet repertory dates back to the last years of the fourteenth century, and, in one instance, perhaps to the middle of that century.

A study of two staff-development techniques for teachers of adult reading in Texas (open access)

A study of two staff-development techniques for teachers of adult reading in Texas

This study examines two methods of in-service preparation for teachers of adult reading. The first method, known as Developing Adult Reading in Texas (DART), uses single concept modules which deal with five specific components of the reading process. The components are Comprehension, Vocabulary, Motivation, Word-Attack Skills, and Diagnosis. The modules provide for teacher involvement and focus on one reading concept at a time. The second method is defined as non-focused reading instruction. Subjects receive information of a general nature concerning the same five components of a reading process. A lecture format is used.

Cigarette Smoking Behavior: Self-Managed Change (open access)

Cigarette Smoking Behavior: Self-Managed Change

In the present study, three self-managed treatment programs were compared with respect to their ability to effect and maintain change in the cigarette smoking behavior of 27 subject volunteers from the population of employees of a Veterans Administration hospital. Subjects were randomly assigned to a self—imposed delay group, a self-directed relaxation group, and a self-monitoring group. The experimental program lasted 6 weeks with a 20-minute individual meeting each week. Three months following treatment, subjects were contacted by mail and were asked to monitor their smoking behavior for one week, and to return their average daily smoking rate by mail. The results provide support for the effectiveness of the self-management technique of self-imposed delay as a durability—enhancing treatment procedure. The effectiveness of self-management techniques as a general class of treatment strategies was not supported. A task for future research would be to establish the effectiveness of the delay technique implemented earlier in the cigarette smoking chain, as well as to determine whether effectiveness is increased or decreased by a specification of the content of a delay interval.
