Hydrodynamic Issues in PAMS Mandrel Target Fabrication

Imperfections in PAMS mandrels critically govern the quality of final ICF targets. Imperfections in the mandrels can have a wide range of origins. Here, they present observations of 3 types of imperfections, and data to support the proposal that hydrodynamic factors during the curing of the mandrel are potential causes of these imperfections.

Maximim Accelerations On The Fuel Assemblies Of a 21-PWR Waste Package During End Impacts (open access)

Maximim Accelerations On The Fuel Assemblies Of a 21-PWR Waste Package During End Impacts

The objective of this calculation is to determine the acceleration of the fuel assemblies contained in a 21-Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) spent nuclear fuel waste package impacting an unyielding surface. A range of initial velocities of the waste package is studied. The scope of this calculation is limited to estimating the acceleration of the fuel assemblies during the impact.

21-PWR Waste Package Side and End Impacts

The objective of this calculation is to determine the structural response of a 21-Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) spent nuclear fuel waste package impacting an unyielding surface. A range of initial velocities and initial angles between the waste package and the unyielding surface is studied. The scope of this calculation is limited to estimating the area of the outer shell (OS) where the residual stress exceeds a given limit (hereafter ''damaged area''). The stress limit is defined as a fraction of the yield strength of the OS material, Alloy 22 (SB-575 N06022), at the appropriate temperature. The design of the 21-PWR waste package used in this calculation is that defined in Reference 8. However, a value of 4 mm was used for the gap between the inner shell and the OS, and the thickness of the OS was reduced by 2 mm. The sketch in Attachment I provides additional information not included in Reference 8. All obtained results are valid for this design only. This calculation is associated with the waste package design and was performed by the Specialty Analyses and Waste Package Design Section. The waste package (i.e. uncanistered spent nuclear fuel disposal container) is classified as Quality Level 1.

A divide-and-conquer algorithm for identifying strongly connectedcomponents (open access)

A divide-and-conquer algorithm for identifying strongly connectedcomponents

Strongly connected components of a directed graph can be found in an optimal linear time, by algorithms based on depth first search. Unfortunately, depth first search is difficult to parallelize. We describe two divide--and--conquer algorithms for this problem that have significantly greater potential for parallelization. We show the expected serial runtime of our simpler algorithm to be O(m log n), for a graph with n vertices and m edges. We then show that the second algorithm has O(mlog n) worst--case complexity.

Nonequilibrium THz Conductivity of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (open access)

Nonequilibrium THz Conductivity of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

Using high sensitivity visible-pump/THz-probe spectroscopywe investigate the dynamics of the complex optical conductivity inoptimally-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d films directly after photoexcitation. Thephotoinduced change in the imaginary part, indicative of a reduction inthe superconducting condensate density, saturates at higherlaser-fluences and shows a complete destruction of thecondensate.

Massless Flavor in Geometry and Matrix Models (open access)

Massless Flavor in Geometry and Matrix Models

The proper inclusion of flavor in the Dijkgraaf-Vafa proposal for the solution of N=1 gauge theories through matrix models has been subject of debate in the recent literature. We here reexamine this issue by geometrically engineering fundamental matter with type IIB branes wrapped on non-compact cycles in the resolved geometry, and following them through the geometric transition. Our approach treats massive and massless flavor fields on equal footing, including the mesons. We also study the geometric transitions and superpotentials for finite mass of the adjoint field. All superpotentials we compute reproduce the field theory results. Crucial insights come from T-dual brane constructions in type IIA.
