Effects of Various Modifications on the Static Longitudinal Stability and Control Characteristics of a 0.065-Scale Model of the Chance Vought Regulus II Missile at a Mach Number of 2.01

"An investigation has been conducted in the Langley 4- by 4-foot supersonic pressure tunnel to determine the effects on the static longitudinal stability and control characteristics of various modifications to a 0.065-scale model of the Chance Vought Regulus II missile. The modifications consisted of a control housing on top of the fuselage, two sizes of canard surfaces with fixed incidence angles, various angles of nose droop, and two types of inlet boundary-layer bleed diverters. The tests were made at a Mach number of 2.01 and a Reynolds number, based on the mean aerodynamic chord of 1.54 x 10(exp 6)" (p. 1).

Calculated Performance of a Mercury-Compressor-Jet Powered Airplane Using a Nuclear Reactor as an Energy Source

Memorandum presenting an analysis of a system consisting of a mercury turbine-driven air compressor a mercury condenser wherein heat was added to the compressed air. The heat addition to the mercury is accomplished in an intermediate heat exchanger (mercury boiler) which has a liquid metal, other than mercury, circulating through the opposite side and through a nuclear reactor. Results regarding the turbine-exhaust pressure, turbine-inlet pressure, condenser-inlet Mach number, effect of nacelle drag, and some general data are provided.

Memorandum presenting an investigation to determine the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of a 35 degree swept-wing fighter airplane with a segmented spoiler-slot deflector lateral control system installed ahead of the conventional ailerons and operated as individual units and as combined segments. The longitudinal characteristics of the airplane and spoiler-slot-deflector effectiveness data were obtained through the complete angle-of-attack range with the ailerons neutral and with the ailerons drooped in conjunction with the normal flaps. Results regarding longitudinal characteristics, spoiler-deflector characteristics, and hinge-moment characteristics are provided.

Report presenting an investigation of the release characteristics of several dynamically scaled store shapes from a simulated bomb bay at Mach numbers of 1.39, 1.60, and 1.98. A streamline store, a blunt-nose store with wedge-type fins of low aspect ratio, and a bluff store with a skirt were tested. Results regarding pitching motions, ejection velocity, effect of increase in altitude, and addition of plate or spike to the nose of the store are provided.

Memorandum presenting an investigation conducted to measure and compare the total-pressure recovery and distortion characteristics at the compressor face of two single-place fighter-type airplanes with similar two-spool turbojet engines, but with dissimilar inlets. The total-pressure recovery was relatively independent of angle of attack and mass-flow ratio for both airplanes except for a significant decrease in pressure recovery with angle of attack for airplane B at the highest Mach numbers tested.

Report presenting tests of an NACA 4-(5)(08)-03 two-blade propeller in the 8-foot high-speed tunnel for blade angles of 45 and 60 degrees extending the Mach number range from that of previous tests of the propeller up to Mach number 0.913. When the forward speed was increased from a low value to a forward Mach number of 0.90, the loss in peak efficiency was found to be not more than 47 percent.

Results regarding landing tests, take-off tests, and practical considerations for the creation of hydro-ski configurations are provided. The hydro-skis suitable for flush retraction into streamline fuselages do appear to offer a practical means of water take-offs and landings.

Report presenting data gathered on a lateral-trim change or wing dropping that involves a rapid change of lateral trim with Mach number, which has occurred on several rocket-powered models used in roll investigations at transonic speeds. The data in this report demonstrates that straight wings with airfoil sections 9 percent thick or greater are susceptible to wing dropping between Mach numbers of 0.9 and 1.0. Results for straight, sweptback, and delta wings are provided.

From Summary: "Theoretical performance data including nozzle-exit temperature, specific impulse, volume specific impulse and composition, temperature, and mean molecular weight of reaction products based on frozen equilibrium and isentropic expansion are presented for 13 propellant combinations at reaction pressure of 300 pounds per square inch absolute and expansion ratio of 20.4. On basis of maximum specific impulse alone, five fuels had the following order for any given oxidant: liquid hydrogen, hydrazine, liquid ammonia, and either hydrazine hydrate or hydroxylamine. Three oxidants with a given fuel had the following order: liquid ozone, liquid oxygen, and 100-percent hydrogen peroxide."

Aerodynamic study of a wing-fuselage combination employing a wing swept back 63 degrees: Characteristics at a Mach number of 1.53 including effect of small variations of sweep

Measured values of lift, drag, and pitching moment at a Mach number of 1.53 and Reynolds numbers of 0.31, 0.62, and 0.84 million are presented for a wing-fuselage combination having a wing leading-edge sweep angle of 63 degrees, an aspect ratio of 3.42, a taper ratio of 0.25, and an NACA 64A006 section in the stream direction. Data are also presented for sweep angles of 57.0 degrees, 60.4 degrees, 67.0 degrees, and 69.9 degrees. The experimentally determined characteristics were less favorable than indicated by the linear theory but the experimental and theoretical trends with sweep were in good agreement. Boundary-layer-flow tests showed that laminar boundary-layer separation was the primary cause of the differences between experiment and theory.

Report presenting aerodynamic and icing investigations conducted in the icing research tunnel on a model of a turbojet-engine nacelle with a long straight air inlet in order to provide basic design criteria for hot-gas blowback systems. The most uniform temperature distribution was obtained with a bleedback of 4.4 percent at a gas temperature of 1000 degrees Fahrenheit and resulted in an average dry-air-temperature rise of 46 degrees Fahrenheit.
