DOE SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL DISPOSAL CONTAINER (open access)

DOE SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL DISPOSAL CONTAINER

The DOE Spent Nuclear Fuel Disposal Container (SNF DC) supports the confinement and isolation of waste within the Engineered Barrier System of the Mined Geologic Disposal System (MGDS). Disposal containers are loaded and sealed in the surface waste handling facilities, transferred to the underground through the access mains, and emplaced in emplacement drifts. The DOE Spent Nuclear Fuel Disposal Container provides long term confinement of DOE SNF waste, and withstands the loading, transfer, emplacement, and retrieval loads and environments. The DOE SNF Disposal Containers provide containment of waste for a designated period of time, and limit radionuclide release thereafter. The disposal containers maintain the waste in a designated configuration, withstand maximum handling and rockfall loads, limit the individual waste canister temperatures after emplacement. The disposal containers also limit the introduction of moderator into the disposal container during the criticality control period, resist corrosion in the expected repository environment, and provide complete or limited containment of waste in the event of an accident. Multiple disposal container designs may be needed to accommodate the expected range of DOE Spent Nuclear Fuel. The disposal container will include outer and inner barrier walls and outer and inner barrier lids. Exterior labels will identify the …

Implications of lifting the ban on the export of Alaskan crude oil: Price and trade impacts (open access)

Implications of lifting the ban on the export of Alaskan crude oil: Price and trade impacts

This study addresses the issue of the ban on exports of Alaskan crude oil. At present almost all crude oil production from Alaska must be sold in the United States, i.e., it may not be exported. This study examines the impact, mainly on the West Coast, of eliminating this export restraint. The study concentrates on two time periods. These are 1988, the most recent year for which complete data are available, and 1995, a year in which Alaskan production is projected to be substantially less than at present. This is the Energy Information Administration's (EIA's) second report on this subject. The first was released earlier in 1990. They differ principally in the years for which results are presented and in the models used to generate quantitative results. The first report was limited to 1988. The quantitative results for that year were based on use of a single region model and therefore did not take into account petroleum interactions among all areas of the world. Because of this limitation, quantitative results were limited to Alaskan crude oil prices. All other price and trade flow results were qualitative. In contrast, the present report covers both 1988 and 1995. The quantitative results are …

Electron-ion interaction cross sections determined by x-ray spectroscopy on EBIT (open access)

Electron-ion interaction cross sections determined by x-ray spectroscopy on EBIT

The Livermore electron beam ion trap (EBIT) is used to measure electron-ion interactions with high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy. Measurements are presented of the K{alpha} x-ray emission of heliumlike Fe{sup 24+} that demonstrate the effect of various processes on the spectrum of highly charged heliumlike ions. In particular, we have studied how dielectronic recombination into high-n Rydberg levels and resonance excitation processes contribute to the x-ray emission near threshold for direct electron-impact excitation. From these and other measurements we infer the cross sections for impact excitation of heliumlike titanium, chromium, manganese, and iron. Comparing the results with theoretical cross sections from distorted-wave calculations we find excellent agreement for all transitions but the heliumlike resonance transition from 1s2p {sup 1}P{sub 1} to ground, whose excitation cross section is measured to be 10%--20% smaller than calculated. 36 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab.

Nebraska residential propane survey, Winter 1991/92

This report summarizes information on propane prices for the October 1991/March 1992 heating season in Nebraska. From October through March participating propane distributors were contacted twice monthly by the Nebraska Energy Office to obtain their current residential (retail) prices of propane. This information was faxed to the US Department of Energy, Energy Information Administration (DOE/EIA) biweekly in report format as prepared by the PEDRO system.

A Special Function Coprocessor for Level-2 (open access)

A Special Function Coprocessor for Level-2

The idea of supplementing Level-2 filtering nodes with additional processing power has been alive within D0 collaboration for some time now. The utility of additional processing power became increasingly recognized as the Level-2 filtering code matures. Here we will describe one scenario of augmenting Level-2 nodes with coprocessing power within the framework of the present D0 data acquisition system. Primary data reduction, consisting of repetitive but simple tasks, form the major part of the first order Level-2 filter, in terms of its time budget. Such computing tasks are well suited to the coprocessor environment. In what follows we will use the term Special Function Coprocessor (SFC) to denote this additional processor. 2 figs.

Predictions of a non-Gaussian model for large scale structure (open access)

Predictions of a non-Gaussian model for large scale structure

A modified CDM model for the origin of structure in the universe based on an inflation model with two interacting scalar fields, is analyzed to make predictions for the statistical properties of the density and velocity fields and the microwave background anisotropy. The initial gauge-invariant potential {zeta} which is defined as {zeta} = {delta}{rho}/({rho} + p) + 3{var_phi}, where {var_phi} is the curvature perturbation amplitude and p is the pressure, is the sum of a Gaussian field {phi}{sub 1}, and the square of a Gaussian field {phi}{sub 2}. A Harrison-Zel`dovich scale-invariant power spectrum is assumed for {phi}{sub 1}; and a log-normal `peak` power spectrum for {phi}{sub 2}. The location and the width of the peak are described by parameters k{sub c} and a. respectively. The model is motivated to some extent by inflation models with two interacting scalar fields, but is mainly interesting as an example of a model whose statistical properties change with scale. On small scales, it is almost identical to a standard scale-invariant Gaussian CDM model. On scales near the location of the peak of the non-Gaussian field, the distributions have long tails in high positive values of the density and velocity fields. Thus, it is easier …
