The Method of Moments in Quantum Mechanics ; The [Pi]-Mesic Disintegration of the Deuteron

The following report contains two reports to summarize a thesis: first, a report describing the classical moment techniques of Tchebycheff, Markov, and Stieltjes that have been applied to the problem of diagonalizing the Hamiltonian operator; and the second report describes an investigation of the higher-order corrections to the mesic disintegration of deuterons that is considered.

Magnetic Acceleration of a Plasma by a Rail Source (open access)

Magnetic Acceleration of a Plasma by a Rail Source

Abstract: "Two parallel wires close together with an arc between them form a hairpin-type of current configuration which should magnetically propel the plasma of the arc. By the time-of-flight measurements with probes it has been demonstrated that directed translational energies of 290 ev can be imparted to deuterons in a plasma produced by a high-current pulsed arc at the tips of two titanium wires loaded with deuterium. It is believed that three deuterons are actually magnetically propelled."

STUDIES OF UPPER-PLENUM COOLANT CIRCULATION IN A QUARTER-SCALE AIR-FLOW MODEL OF THE PWR

Air-flow studies were run in a quarter-scale flow model of the PWR to determine distribution of flow throughout the upper-plenum region with two different hold-down-barrel designs. With each hold-down barrel, flow paths were determined for operation with four loops, three loops, two opposed loops, and two adjacent loops. Exploration of flow patterns and velocities throughout the upper plenum showed that circulation of coolant throughout the upper plenum was satisfactory with either of the hold-down barrels investigated. PRODUCTION OF ELECTROLYTIC THORIUM CELL FEED BY A WET CHEMICAL METHOD. Process Report (open access)

PRODUCTION OF ELECTROLYTIC THORIUM CELL FEED BY A WET CHEMICAL METHOD. Process Report

In order to produce a substantially oxide-free chloride. a specialized technique, based on the chemical characteristics of the ammonium thorium chloride complexes, has been found optimum. The procedure involves the formation of a solution of thorium chloride and ammonium chloride, evaporation of the solution to form a hydrated ammonium thorium chloride complex, dehydration of the complex by low-temperature drying, and ignition of the complex, after inter-mixture with an alkali chloride, to remove ammonium chloride and to form a thorium alkali chloride mixture for electrolysis. Analysis of Tapered Circular Plates (open access)

Analysis of Tapered Circular Plates

Tables of numerical values of all necessary functions and instructions on their use in the stress analysis of circular plates which have a linear thickness-radius relationship, and which are loaded axisymmetrically, are presented. The analysis is based on the classical smalldeflection theory. Emphasis is placed on plates whose thickness at the inner radius is greater than the thickness at the outer radius. However, a limited number of plates for which the opposite is true may also be analyzed by the procedure presented. The limitations on the dimensions of the latter type of plate are explained. (auth)
