Some Simplified Expressions for the 3-j Symbols (open access)

Some Simplified Expressions for the 3-j Symbols

A general formalism is developed for obtaining simplified expressions for the 3-j symbol using the symmetry properties of the symbol discovered by Regge. Some new formulas are derived from the formalism for cases in which Racah's series for the symbol is summable. (auth)

SNAP 7D--STRONTIUM-90 FUELED THERMOELECTRIC GENERATOR POWER SOURCE. THIRTY- WATT U.S. NAVY FLOATING WEATHER STATION. Final Report (open access)

SNAP 7D--STRONTIUM-90 FUELED THERMOELECTRIC GENERATOR POWER SOURCE. THIRTY- WATT U.S. NAVY FLOATING WEATHER STATION. Final Report

The objectives of the SNAP-7D program were to design, manufacture, test and deliver a thirty-watt electric generating system for a modified U. S. Navy NOMAD-class weather buoy to be stationed in the Gulf of Mexico. The sixty-watt Sr/sup 90/ thermoelectric generator, the relay panel, the batteries, and the installation of the system in a boattype buoy are described. In addition to delivering the power supply, many tests were required for the SNAP-7D system to demonstrate its conformance to the contract statement of work. The electrical tests of the generator and of the system, the shock and vibration tests, and the tests at the environmental temperature extremes are discussed. (auth) Quantitative studies were made of the angular distribution of elastic and inelastic scattering of 25-kev electrons on noble gases, and the results were compared with scattering theory in the Born approximation. Results are presented in tables and graphs. (M.C.G.)

Kinetics, Stability, and Control. A Selected Bibliography

References to 529 articles on nuclear reactor control, kinetics, and stability published before autumn 1962 are included. Emphasis is on calculations and theory since the references serve as an aid in analyzing the dynamic behavior of SNAP reactor systems. (D.C.W.)

The Magnesium-28-Aluminum-28 System: An Aluminum-28 Generator (open access)

The Magnesium-28-Aluminum-28 System: An Aluminum-28 Generator

A milking method was developed for the production of the short-lived Al/ sup 28/ for use in physiological experiments. A Mg/sup 28/ solution is obtained by the irradiation and purification of a Li/sup 6/Mg/sup 26/ alloy, and it is placed on a Dowex 50W column in the Na/sup +/ form and then washed with 1 N NaOH. The Al/sup 28/ is eluted in 10 to 30 sec by 1 N NaOH solution containing 0.5 mg/ ml of carrier Al. The half lives of Mg/sup 28/ and Al/sup 28/ were determined to be 20.88 plus or minus 0.06 hr and 2.238 plus or minus 0.006 min, respectively. (D.L.C.)

Stratospheric Monitoring Program (open access)

Stratospheric Monitoring Program

"Results of the continuing stratospheric flight test evaluation program for the Del Model I Electrostatic Precipitator Sampler and the Del Electrical Discharge Altimeter are described and discussed. Only one of four balloon launches reached floating altitude. The altimeter obtained an altitude recording consistent with concurrent aneroid barocoder readings. The reported gross gamma concentration for the precipitator sampler was approximates 25 and 80% higher than those of the two simultaneous direct flow filter samples. The completion of the design and construction of two prototype units of the Del Electrical Discharge Altimeter and their laboratory evaluation are described. A preliminary design concept is presented for an operational high volume electrostatic precipitator sampler to operate with high collection efficiency at an ambient flowrate of 500 cfm throughout the altitude range 100,000 to 150,000 ft."
