Feasibility Report on Fast Exponential Experiment

The general program established at Argonne National Laboratory in connection with the Fast Power Breeder Reactor (PBR) includes performance of exponential experiments on assemblies having compositions which may exist in the reactor core. This report deals with that phase of the program known as the Fast Exponential Experiment which may be described very briefly as follows. An assembly of fissile (U-235) and fertile material (too small to be self-critical) intermixed with poisons (such as are encountered in the mechanical structure and coolant system of a self-sustaining reactor) is fed with neutrons from an auxiliary source. By measurements of the neutron flux within the assembly, important parameters can be calculated which are necessary to the proport design of an actual critical reactor of the same composition.

A Study of Efficiencies and Pressure Drop Characteristics of Air-Filtering Media

Removal of particles from air is discussed in terms of three classes of filtering media--air-sampling, respirator, and air-cleaning. Plots of efficiency versus filtering velocity are presented. The pressure drop characteristics of the filters are discussed in terms of initial pressure drops of the clean filters, variations in pressure drop of the individual filters, and comparison of loading rates.

Diffusion of Stack Gases in Very Stable Atmospheres: Case II

In 1949 Barad presented two solutions to the general diffusion equation. Basic in both solutions is the assumption that in very stable atmospheres a point source may be replaced by a vertical area of uniform concentration at a short distance downwind. This vertical area is considered to exist at the distance at which the plume finally "levels-off" and assumes a flat ribbon-like appearance. In addition if the distance over which diffusion takes place is limited to one or two miles and if only the stable atmosphere with its narrow range of eddy sizes is considered, the average diffusion co-efficient (K) has a signficance which it does not have in the case of neutral equilibrium.

Plankton collected from the Columbia River by the net method and by the centrifuge method were compared. The centrifuged plankton (nannoplankton) exceeded the net plankton in weight, in abundance of organisms and in radioactivity. Similar seasonal trends were present in both types of plankton.

An Automatic Polarograph for the Determination of Uranium in Process Waste Streams

The automatic polarograph is ideally suited for the analysis of waste streams for uranium in the Metal Recovery Process, and with modification, it is applicable to other processes, pilot plants, and even to laboratory set ups. The instrument is simple, dependable, and relatively trouble free in operation. It provides an immediate record of the uranium in the waste and, through better control of the process, lower processing costs.

Theory of Alpha Decay of Spheroidal Nuclei

Abstract. Various effects of spheroidal nuclear distortion on the alpha decay process are considered theoretically. Differential equations governing alpha decay in the region beyond the maximum nuclear radius are derived. They consist of ordinary radial Schrodinger equations for alpha decay to various nuclear states with the addition of quadrupole interaction terms coupling the various equations. The significance of wave amplitudes of various angular momentum alpha groups as Fourier components of the total wave function is pointed out, and experimental alpha decay rate data for even-even nuclei are discussed in these terms.

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Static Lateral Stability Characteristics of Wing-Fuselage Combinations at High Subsonic Speeds

A systematic research program is being carried out in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of various arrangements of the component parts of research-type airplane models, including some complete model configurations. Data are being obtained on characteristics in pitch, sideslip, and during steady roll at Mach numbers from 0.40 to about 0.95. This paper presents results which show the effect of taper ratio on the aerodynamic characteristics in sideslip of wing-fuselage combinations having wings with a sweep of 45 degrees at the quarter-chord line, an aspect ratio of 4, and a NACA 65A006 airfoil section.

"A thorough analysis of the data obtained on depleted, natural, and enriched uranium lattices has been made. Consideration of the possible sources of discrepancies between theory and experiment has led to a suspicion of the calculated thermal neutron diffusion lengths. A series of diffusion length measurements in non-multiplying lattices of lead-cadmium alloy has been initiated. An analysis of some early exponential experiments on lattices proposed for a neutron production reactor has been carried out in order to determine whether experimental results on these more complicated structures are consistent with the analysis carried out for the "clean" lattices."

Dynamics of Stagewise Extraction Columns

A calculation method has been developed in order to correlate continuous-flow extraction results in mixer-settlers with rate data for batch experiments. This correlation utilizes dynamic extraction coefficients (E's) that are calculated from the rate data and the equilibrium extraction coefficients. The dynamic coefficients may then be used in stage-by-stage calculations, or their average values used in equations derived herein from the overall performance of center-fed columns.
