Synergistic capture mechanisms for alkali and sulfur species from combustion (open access)

Synergistic capture mechanisms for alkali and sulfur species from combustion

The research described here is directed towards an investigation of mechanisms governing the capture of alkali metals and SO{sub 2} by injection of clay based sorbents into a combustor environment. While the species of interest are products of coal combustion, the earlier parts of these investigations will use a gas flame doped with relevant levels of Potassium, Sodium and Sulfur dioxide typical of a coal flame environment. This ensures that the particles so sampled from the combustor are from the injected sorbents and not mixed with coal ash. The approach here is to translate results from bench scale studies into evaluating governing mechanisms at a practical combustor level scale in which there exist both temperature variations and flow mixing characteristics. The research will thus consist of two tasks: (1) Detailed experimental studies for Alkali metals K, Na and toxic metal Cr in the presence of SO{sub 2} in which effect of parameters such as Speciation, Temperature profiles, Injection temperatures, residence time, bulk concentration levels, sorbent particle size and sorbent injection rates will be evaluated. (2) Theoretical modeling: Both equilibrium thermodynamics and reaction kinetics models will be used to correlate the experimental data. For these experiments the Sorbent type is Kaolinite …

Sub-nanosecond cinematography in laser fusion research: current techniques and applications at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (open access)

Sub-nanosecond cinematography in laser fusion research: current techniques and applications at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Progress in laser fusion research has increased the need for detail and precision in the diagnosis of experiments. This has spawned the development and use of sophisticated sub-nanosecond resolution diagnostic systems. These systems typically use ultrafast x-ray or optical streak cameras in combination with spatially imaging or spectrally dispersing elements. These instruments provide high resolution data essential for understanding the processes occurring in the interaction of high intensity laser light with targets. Several of these types of instruments and their capabilities will be discussed. The utilization of these kinds of diagnostics systems on the nearly completed 100 kJ Nova laser facility will be described.

Impact of several reactor features on TF coil design for TPSS (open access)

Impact of several reactor features on TF coil design for TPSS

Limits of acceptable radiation levels relative to winding pack current densities in the toroidal field (TF) coils is given for relevant reactor designs. Force cooled conductors are stipulated in this study. The maximum field which can be supported while maintaining adequate stability and the ability to protect the coils in the event of a quench to end of the machine life is reported to be 6T. TF configuration, winding pack design, heat removal, stability, copper fraction and effect of damage, limiting current, and protection are discussed. 12 refs., 2 tabs. (WRF)

Steam gasification of carbon: Catalyst properties (open access)

Steam gasification of carbon: Catalyst properties

Coal gasification by steam is of critical importance in converting coal to gaseous products (CO, H[sub 2], CO[sub 2], CH[sub 4]) that can then be further converted to synthetic natural gas and higher hydrocarbon fuels. Alkali and alkaline earth metals (present as oxides) catalyze coal gasification reactions and cause them to occur at significantly lower temperatures. A more fundamental understanding of the mechanism of the steam gasification reaction and catalyst utilization may well lead to better production techniques, increased gasification rates, greater yields, and less waste. We are studying the gasification of carbon by steam in the presence of alkali and alkaline earth oxides, using carbonates as the starting materials. Carbon dioxide gasification (CO[sub 2] + C --> 2CO) has been studied in some detail recently, but much less has been done on the actual steam gasification reaction, which is the main thrust of our work. In particular, the form of the active catalyst compound during reaction is still questioned and the dependence of the concentration of active sites on reaction parameters is not known. Until recently, no measurements of active site concentrations during reaction had been made. We have recently used transient isotope tracing to determine active site concentration …

Investigation of Sulfur-Tolerant Catalysts for Selective Synthesis of Hydrocarbon Liquids From Coal-Derived Gases. Quarterly Technical Progress Report, September 19-December 18, 1980

A 15% iron boride on SiO/sub 2/ catalyst was prepared using an alcohol solution reduction with NaBH/sub 4/. H/sub 2/ chemisorption measurements were performed for Fe-S-100 (3% Fe/SlO/sub 2/) and are in progress for the iron-boride-silica catalyst. Reduction of Co catalysts at 623 K rather than 723 K is being tested as a method to improve dispersion by decreasing the amount of Co-support interaction. An in depth study of non olefinic and nonparaffinic compound retention times on the 10% SP2100 chromotograph column has shown that the compounds elute in the following order for a specific carbon number: alkene < alkane < aldehyde < ketone < ester < alcohol < acid. Mass flow controllers have been installed in the reactor system and are fully operational.

Frequencies of small oscillations in the vicinity of a fixed point: Application to sextupole insertions

The stability criterion of A.C. Bountis for the periodic orbits of a dynamical mapping is applied to the horizontal motion of a particle in a storage ring with sextupole magnets. The approach developed takes into account any number of non-linear ''kicks'' in one superperiod of the ring, non-equal spacing between nonlinear elements and a strong focusing magnet system. The stability criterion for a fixed point is given provided such a fixed point is found. The formula for the tune of the small oscillations for any stable fixed point is derived. 2 refs.

Report of Foreign Travel of William Fulkerson, December 1990

The Dahlem Conference on controlling CO{sub 2} in the atmosphere focused on research needs broadly defined. The RD D needs discussed tended to be social-institutional rather than technically oriented perhaps because of the propensity of most attendees, but many important ideas emerged, including those related to questions on technology adoption by both developed, emerging, or transition economics. The European attendees appeared to be strongly devoted to reducing emissions, and doing it soon using efficiency improvement and ultimately renewables. The importance of efficiency improvement was universally accepted, but the extent to which it can be relied upon is a major uncertainty for everyone except the most zealous. There was no detailed discussion of what could be done to encourage the more rapid adoption of renewables. Most attendees seemed to have discounted nuclear, but, at any rate, the problems of reviving nuclear worldwide were not discussed in detail.

Low-density, salt-loaded foams. [RbF]

An experiment was conducted at LLL that required low-density, fine-celled foams uniformly loaded with rubidium. Foams meeting these requirements were produced by impregnating foams made from polyacrylonitrile with rubidium fluoride. Foams with densities from 0.025 to 0.4 g/cm/sup 3/ were prepared and loaded with 0.002 to 0.20 g/cm/sup 3/ of rubidium fluoride.

Calculation of a tracking force (open access)

Calculation of a tracking force

The original calculation (1975-76) of an electromagnetic mechanism for beam-channel tracking is presented. The system model is not realistic because only a flat profile channel which completely encloses the beam is considered. However, a clear demonstration of the existence of a tracking force is made, as a point of departure for the more recent studies which incorporate a realistic model of the beam head and conductivity profile.

Regional trends in transmissivity and hydraulic conductivity, lower cretaceous sands, north-central Texas

Depositional and structural history control the regional trends in transmissivity and hydraulic conductivity in Lower Cretaceous-age sands along the Balcones Ouachita trend in North-Central Texas. Because of scarcity of pumping tests, delineation of trends was only possible by incorporating transmissivities estimated from specific capacities. Statistical comparison of estimated and pumping-test transmissivities confirmed the validity of this approach. The resulting contour maps should be useful in the evaluation of these aquifers for potential as low-temperature-geothermal resources; the method can be applied to other aquifers to facilitate ground-water-management programs.
