Design procedure and limited test results for a high solidity, 12-inch transonic impeller with axial discharge

Report presenting an approximate inverse impeller design procedure based on the assumption of axisymmetric, nonviscous flow along with some limited experimental data obtained from a high solidity, 12-inch transonic impeller. The design procedure includes a point-by-point solution of the impeller flow conditions along a series of streamlines in the radial-axial plane. Results regarding the overall performance, impeller flow limits, and blade structural failure are provided.

Use of flame-immersed blades to improve combustion limits and efficiency of a 5-inch diameter connected-pipe, ram-jet combustor

Report presenting the effects of flame-immersed blades on combustion stability and efficiency, which were determined at various combustor-inlet conditions by use of several geometric blade arrangements, two fuels, two fuel-injection systems, and two blade temperatures. Specific combustor configurations with flame-immersed blades showed marked improvement in stability and efficiency. The operational life of the blades was also observed to be excellent.

Report presenting an extension of NACA RM A52C14 about inlet design and performance for Mach numbers of 1.5 to 2.0. A two-dimensional inviscid analysis is used to compare the performance of several types of inlets when used in conjunction with a turbojet engine with constant-volume air flow. Results regarding air delivery and air requirements, drag factors, evaluation of inlet performance, significance of the drag summation, and inlet and engine-matching considerations are provided.

A flight study of the effects on tracking performance of changes in the lateral-oscillatory characteristics of a fighter airplane

A study of the effects of variations in lateral-oscillatory characteristics on air-to-air tracking performance has been made, using a conventional, propeller-driven fighter airplane equipped with servo devices for varying these characteristics in flight. Tracking runs were made both in smooth air and in simulated rough air. The lateral-oscillation period, damping, and roll coupling were varied over wide ranges during the investigation.

The influence of vortex generators on the performance of a short 1.9:1 straight-wall annular diffuser with a whirling inlet flow

Report presenting an investigation in a duct system with fully developed pipe flow to determine the effects of vortex generators on the performance of a diffuser with whirling inlet flow. Testing was made with three different inlet whirl angles and rectangular, noncambered airfoils that varied in chord, span, angle setting, number, and location. Results for the 20.6 degree inlet whirl angle, 15.2 degree inlet whirl angle, 0 degree inlet whirl angle, and effect of inlet whirl angle on diffuser performance are provided.

The method consists of preparing an extremely thick slip of materials like titanium carbide with a small amount of binder, casting the slip in a mold, and freezing to retain the shape of the casting. Results regarding the applicability of the method and factors affecting soundness, are provided.

Report presenting flight testing of a 60 degree delta wing (NACA 65A003 airfoil section) mounted in midwing and high-wing positions on a modified transonic body from Mach numbers 0.8 to 2.0. The high-wing configuration without nacelles had higher drag coefficients than the midwing configuration without nacelles, but both configurations had approximately the same longitudinal distribution and frontal area. Results regarding nacelle internal drag, configuration drag, nacelle drag coefficient, and normal-force coefficient are provided.

A study by high-speed photography of combustion and knock in a spark-ignition engine

"The study of combustion in a spark-ignition engine given in Technical Report no. 704 has been continued. The investigation was made with the NACA high-speed motion-picture camera and the NACA optical engine indicator. The camera operates at the rate of 40,000 photographs a second and makes possible the study of phenomena occurring in time intervals as short as 0.000025 second. Photographs are presented of combustion without knock and with both light and heavy knocks, the end zone of combustion being within the field of view" (p. 15).

Investigation in the 7-by-10 Foot Wind Tunnel of Ducts for Cooling Radiators within an Airplane Wing

Report presents the results of an investigation made in the NACA 7 by 10-foot wind tunnel of a large-chord wing model with a duct to house a simulated radiator suitable for a liquid-cooled engine. The duct was expanded to reduce the radiator losses, and the installation of the duct and radiator was made entirely within the wing to reduce form and interference drag. The tests were made using a two-dimensional-flow setup with a full-span duct and radiator. Section aerodynamic characteristics of the basic airfoil are given and also curves showing the characteristics of the various duct-radiator combinations.

Performance of the compressor, combustor, and turbine operating as integral parts of the XJ34-WE-32 turbojet engine was determined in the Lewis altitude wind tunnel over a range of altitudes from 5000 to 55,000 feet and flight Mach numbers from 0.28 to 1.05. Data were obtained for each of four exhaust-nozzle areas and are presented in graphical and tabular form.

The calculation of downwash behind supersonic wings with an application to triangular plan forms

A method is developed consistent with the assumptions of small perturbation theory which provides a means of determining the downwash behind a wing in supersonic flow for a known load distribution. The analysis is based upon the use of supersonic doublets which are distributed over the plan form and wake of the wing in a manner determined from the wing loading. The equivalence in subsonic and supersonic flow of the downwash at infinity corresponding to a given load distribution is proved.

On Similarity Rules for Transonic Flows

"A method used by Tsien to derive similarity rules for hypersonic flows is utilized to derive Von Karman's similarity rules for transonic flows. At the lower limit of the transonic region of flow the theory yields a formula for the critical stream Mach numbers of a given family of symmetrical profiles. It is further shown that this formula can also be obtained by means of the Prandtl-Glauert small-perturbation method" (p. 83).

Results regarding primary-nozzle performance, ejector performance, typical ejector characteristics, effect of operating temperatures on ejector flow characteristics, and effect of geometry on ejector performance are provided.
