(Fission product transport experiments (HFR-B1))

Travel to the JRC Petten was for the purpose of discussing the HFR-B1 experiment and post irradiation activities. Technical assessment of the experiment strongly supports the concept of enhanced fission gas release at temperatures above 1100{degree}C, the extensive release of stored fission gas at water vapor levels postulated in accident scenarios, an increase in the steady-state fission gas release under hydrolyzing conditions, and an increase in gas release during thermal cycling. Schedules were established for completion of the work and issuance of reports by September 1990. At the KFA Juelich agreement was reached on the PIE activities for HFR-B1 and a schedule established. The final PIE report is due June 1991. Choices of accident condition tests in the PIE have yet to be made by the US participants. A proposal for the establishment of a new cooperative effort on model and code development was presented at the Institut fuer Nukleare Sicherheitsforschung of KFA. The proposal was considered premature; discussions dealing with general principles, basic aims, and organization were requested; particular concerns about free exchange of information, overlap with the existing safety subprogram, and exclusive cooperation with ORNL were raised. A strong desire for cooperation and the opinion that the raised …

(Restriction of virus infection by plants: Annual report, 1986)

This research concerns the strong resistance, or even immunity, against a specific virus that is exhibited by one or a few lines of a plant species, in contrast to the general susceptibility of most lines of that species. The contrast between the reactions to virus inoculation of different lines of one species implies that a single gene or a very few genes may mediate the resistance or immunity. The prospects for isolating, studying and transferring such a gene should be good for a system with these characteristics. Seedlings of a line Arlington of the cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) fail to support the replication of cowpea mosaic virus strain SB (CPMV-SB). Genetic crosses of Arlington cowpea to the systemic host Blackeye 5 cowpea show that the immunity is inherited as a simple dominant gene. In contrast to the seedlings, the protoplasts of the Arlington cowpea support CPMV-SB replication, but only to a very low level compared to protoplasts of Blackeye 5 cowpeas. From evidence reported earlier we concluded that Arlington cowpea protoplasts restrict the production of CPMV-SB proteins. We postulated, and obtained evidence for, a proteinase inhibitor that is specific for a CPMV-SB proteinase. This proteinase inhibitor is our prime candidate for …

Total cross sections and elastic scattering at the SSC (open access)

Total cross sections and elastic scattering at the SSC

The need is discussed of a special purpose detector for the measurement of elastic scattering at the SSC. The detector would cover as small a solid angle as is practical. Two techniques are described briefly to measure total cross sections at hadron storage rings. The direct method is to measure the interaction rate in an IR of known luminosity - a method that gets more difficult increasing energy. A second method is to use the optical theorem. 6 refs., 1 fig. LAr Dewar Condensing Coils at D0 (open access)

LAr Dewar Condensing Coils at D0

These internal coils are used to condense and cool the gaseous argon contained in the LAr storage dewar at D0, at a rate not to exceed 40KW. The coolant is LN{sub 2}, piped in from another, similar, dewar of 36-feet higher elevation (see Diagram A). The specific design of the coils are outlined in Process Engineering drawing C-32545, attached. The material components are as follows. The internal coil piping material is constructed of 165-feet of 1 1/2-inch NPS schedule 40 pipe, of type 5083 aluminum. 3-inch NPS schedule 80 type 5086 aluminum pipe is used for the headers of the triple hairpin coil welded assembly. The coils are supported by a series of aluminum brackets fixed to the roof of the dewar. Note 35 on the drawing points out the brackets which hold the coils to the roof of the dewar. They are not connected in any way to the coils, and act only as supports. This feature allows for contraction of the coils, and avoids any longitudinal thermal contraction stresses at the vessel nozzles that might have occurred. A stress analysis of the internal coil feed lines is outlined in DO engineering note 239. The analysis shows that the …

Groundwater quality assessment/corrective action feasibility plan: New TNX Seepage Basin

The New TNX Seepage Basin is located across River Road east of the TNX Area at the Savannah River Site. Currently the basin is out of service and is awaiting closure in accordance with the Consent Decree settled under Civil Act No. 1:85-2583. Groundwater monitoring data from the detection monitoring network around the New TNX Seepage Basin was recently analyzed using South Carolina Hazardous Waste Management Regulations R.61-79.264.92 methods to determine if groundwater downgradient of the New TNX Seepage Basin had been impacted. Results from the data analysis indicate that the groundwater has been impacted by inorganic constituents with no associated health risks. The impacts resulting from elevated levels of inorganic constituents, such as Mn, Na, and Total PO{sub 4} in the water table, do not pose a threat to human health and the environment.

Tritium breeding and activation in the cascade reactor (open access)

Tritium breeding and activation in the cascade reactor

Cascade is an inertial fusion reactor that uses circulating Li/sub 2/O pellets as a coolant and tritium breeding medium. The pellets flow through a horizontal rotating vessel, and they are held against the vessel wall by centrifugal force. Three wall designs were considered: a steel shell and a SiC shell prestressed by Al or steel cables. The nuclear heating, tritium breeding ration, afterheat, inhalation biological hazard potential, and shallow land burial index were calculated for each configuration. Tritium breeding is more than adequate (1.35). Spray cooling of the wall exterior will be required during operation, but thermal radiation heat removal will be sufficient after shutdown. Allowable release fractions during an accident are higher than in comparable designs. Disposal of activated components by shallow land burial is feasible. Hands-on maintenance of the SiC/Al wall will be possible if it is moved away from the reflector.

El Salvador: Policy Issues for the 98th Congress

Since 1981 President Reagan has requested increasing amounts of military and economic aid to assist two embattled Salvadoran governments in he struggle against leftist guerrillas. While Congress has generally supported the Administration's requests for economic aid, it has regularly cut military assistance to El Salvador and has made the aid contingent upon a semi-annual Presidential certification that human rights are improving in the country.
