Summary of High Temperature Liquid Metal, Fused Salt Pump Development Work in the Ornl-Anp Project for the Period July 1950-January 1954 (open access)

Summary of High Temperature Liquid Metal, Fused Salt Pump Development Work in the Ornl-Anp Project for the Period July 1950-January 1954

All of the information available on high-temperature pumps originally reported in the ANF quarterly reports is summarized. The development program was more of a seal development than a specific pump program. Frozen seals of various kinds were tried and for many commercial applications would be perfectly satisfactory. For application in a system such as the ARE, operation of the frozen seal puunp is questionable. A gas-sealed pump was developed and is expected to be entirely adequate for a system like the ARE. THEORY OF MULTIPLE COULOMB SCATTERING FROM EXTENDED NUCLEI (open access)

THEORY OF MULTIPLE COULOMB SCATTERING FROM EXTENDED NUCLEI

Two independent methods are described for calculating the multiple scattering distribution for projected angle scattering resulting when very high energy charged particles traverse a thick scatterer. The single scattering law for projected angle scattering is taken to be the Rutherford scattering law for projected angle scattering modified at small angles by electron shielding and at large angles by a nuclear form factor F{sub n}({phi}/{phi}{sub o}) which gives the effect of the finite nuclear size. The calculations can be carried through for any reasonable choice of F{sub n} and have been carried through for two suggested choices of F{sub n} for the examples of fast {mu}-meson scattering in 2 cm and 5 cm thick lead slabs, with good agreement for the two methods of calculation. The results are compared with the theories of Moliere and Olbert.

PREPARATION AND CONSOLIDATION OF THORIUM AND THORIUM HYDRIDE POWDERS (open access)

PREPARATION AND CONSOLIDATION OF THORIUM AND THORIUM HYDRIDE POWDERS

A study was made of powder characteristics and cold compacting properties of metallic thorium, Th/sub 2/ and Th/sub 4/ powders produced from Annes billet lathe turnings. In addition a preliminary study was made of the influence of various powder processing and sintering variables on some physical properties of cold compacted bodies. The cold compacting and sintering characteristics of metallic thorium powder were generally superior to those ot the hydride powders. The thorium powder could be cold compacted at 75 tsi to 96% of theoretical Annes billet density and sintered to 99% of the billet density when heated to above 1250 deg C for one-half hour. A test bar made from cold compacted and sintered thorium powder was found to have an ultimate tensile strength of 45,200 psi and an area reduction of 38.5%. (auth)

AN ESTIMATE OF THE LAPRE POWER AND STEAM FLOW CHARACTERISTICS (open access)

AN ESTIMATE OF THE LAPRE POWER AND STEAM FLOW CHARACTERISTICS

A method of numerical solution is developed for calculating the LAPRE (Los Alamos Power Reactor Experiment) coolant pressure drop and pcwer output with variable coolant inlet pressure, flow rate, and reactor solution temperature. The results of a series of calculations are presented that show excessive pressure drops and sonic exit flow as the flow rate is increased and the inlet pressure is decreased. Both supercritical and subcritical coolant flow regions are investignted. Reactor pcwer is shown to be strongly dependent on the solution temperaiure in the region of 700 to 750 deg F. At the design flow of 12 gal/min, excessive coolant pressure drops are encountered at inlet pressures of 2000 lb/in./ and below. (auth)

BOILING RUBIDIUM AS A REACTOR COOLANT. PREPARATION OF RUBIDIUM METAL, PHYSICAL AND THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES, AND COMPATIBILITY WITH INCONEL

Rubidium metal was investigated as a possible heattransfer medium for an aircraft reactor. The separation of rubidium from other alkali metals by ion exchange was demonstrated. Data are presented on the physical and thermodynamic properties of rubidium and corrosive effects on Inconel at elevated temperatures. It was concluded on the basis of empirical formulas that more heat can be transferred in a boiling rubidium system than in a comparable boiling water system. (C.H.)

METALLURGY DIVISION SEMIANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT FOR PERIOD ENDING APRIL 10, 1954 (open access)

METALLURGY DIVISION SEMIANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT FOR PERIOD ENDING APRIL 10, 1954

Transformation kinetics studies were started on Ag - Zr alloys. Tensile properties of Th alloys with additions of 2 and 4% Ti and varving C content were determined. The production of U - Al alloys by reduction of UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ in a cryolite slag was demonstrated. Dynamic corrosion experiments including impact tests on commercial-purity titanium samples exposed to oxygen-preseurized UO/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ periods in excess of 500 hr indicated that no change in impact behavior occurred. Similar tests on Zircaloy 2 gave like results. Corrosion tests on stress relieved stainless steel weld specimens indicated a generally superior corrosion resistance of welds that had been heated to 1000 deg F for 6 hr compared with as-welded specimens. Data on behavior of materials stuitable for bearings and hard facings in molten fluorides are given. Materials tested in contact with liquid lead include alloys such as 25% Mo-75% Ni. 2% Si14% Cr-84% Fe, Hastelloy B, Ti, Co, Be, and 13% Cr-87% Fe. Studies are in progress on the mass transfer characteritics of various structural metals in contact with fused hydroxides. Evaluation of materials for brazing alloys was continued on the Ni-P eutectic along with studies on other brazing alloys such as Ni-Ge, …
