Rapid embryonic accretion of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the brain of an altricial bird with an aquatic-based maternal diet (open access)

Rapid embryonic accretion of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the brain of an altricial bird with an aquatic-based maternal diet

This article communicates the results of a study conducted on red-winged blackbirds where brain phospholipid composition during development was measured and diet was manipulated. The dietary study confirmed that nestling brains are sensitive to fatty acid supply. The findings of this article suggest that Red-winged blackbirds may be able to advance cognitive development relative to other altricial species owing to their aquatic maternal diet.

Bot-teachers in hybrid massive open online courses (MOOCs): A post-humanist experience (open access)

Bot-teachers in hybrid massive open online courses (MOOCs): A post-humanist experience

This article explores networked learning technologies and the development of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). The study examines and explains hybrid MOOCs and focuses on the use of bot-teachers within a post-humanist perspective. The research findings reveal that, while the use of bot-teachers is beneficial in terms of facilitating and increasing discourse/interaction, it is ineffective in providing other components of teaching presence. Yet ultimately, learners' positive behaviors indicate that bot-teachers hold promise as an educational tool.

The C₂H₂ + NO₂ Reaction: Implications for High Pressure Oxidation of C₂H₂/NOx Mixtures (open access)

The C₂H₂ + NO₂ Reaction: Implications for High Pressure Oxidation of C₂H₂/NOx Mixtures

Article discussing an experimental and kinetic modeling study of the interaction between C₂H₂ and NOx under flow reactor conditions in the intermediate temperature range (600–900 K), high pressure (50–60 bar), and for stoichiometries ranging from reducing to strongly oxidizing. The results show that presence of NOx serves both to sensitize and inhibit oxidation of C₂H₂.

Experimental and Computational Studies of the Kinetics of the Reaction of Hydrogen Atoms with Carbon Disulfide (open access)

Experimental and Computational Studies of the Kinetics of the Reaction of Hydrogen Atoms with Carbon Disulfide

Article discussing an investigation of the reaction of H + CS₂ products. The reaction was found to be pressure dependent and in the fall-off region or near the low pressure limit. Transition state theory yields an estimate for the high-pressure limit of addition over 290–300 K of 1.3 × 10−9 exp( −7.2 kJ mol −1 /RT) cm3 molecule −1 s −1. Uncertainties are discussed in the text.
