Kinematics of the Relativistic Two-Body Problem (open access)

Kinematics of the Relativistic Two-Body Problem

Abstract: "The kinematics of elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, and the two body reaction problem is developed in the relativistic limit and exact expressions obtained for the energies, angles, and solid-angle transformations involved. The results are specialized for zero rest mass of one or more of the particles involved. An outline for the coding of the problem on the I.B.M. Electronic Data Processing Machine, Type 701 is presented."

Fall-Out Studies with a Laboratory Controlled Model

From abstract: "To seek information for a better understanding of the phenomena involved in fall-out, a fireball effect was simulated in a small closed room by subjecting various materials to a high-current (~360 amp.) are produced between graphite electrodes, and anode being impregnated with radioactive materials. The time duration of the arc, power dissipated, and distance from the samples were controlled. The radioactivity which remained airborne, that which settled out onto the floor and its distribution, and that deposited on the test material was measured, and percentages of the total measured activity were determined."

Estimated Upper Bounds to the Half-Life of Thermal Decomposition of Ammonia, Hydrogen, Methane, and Propane (open access)

Estimated Upper Bounds to the Half-Life of Thermal Decomposition of Ammonia, Hydrogen, Methane, and Propane

An estimate was made of the upper bound for the half-time of dissociation at 100 atm for ammonia, methane, and propane at 2500 deg K and hydrogen at 5000 deg K. In each case a unimolecular reactron in the homogeneous gas phase was chosen as most suitable for this purpose. Slater's theory has been used to estimate the necessary frequency factors. The upper bounds to the half- time for dissociation range from 3 x 10⁻⁷ to 6 x 10⁻⁶ sec. Extrapolation of decomposition rate data obtained at --1000 deg C and 1 atm pressure gives smaller values for the half-time of dissociation.

Energetic Neutral Injection into Thermonuclear Machines (open access)

Energetic Neutral Injection into Thermonuclear Machines

Abstract: "A scheme is discussed in which D+ ions would be accelerated to about 100 kev in a conventional accelerator, then be sent through a gas target frmo which about half the ions would emerge neutral with very little scattering or energy loss; the neutral beam would then cross into a magnetic field and part of the atoms would be ionized and trapped by colliding with the already trapped ions. The smallest mirror machine with a central field of 30-40 kilogauss, 2;1 mirror ratio and β = 01 to 0.5 that would trap most of the neutral beam in the steady state, would be about a meter in diameter and require the order of hundreds of amperes of D+ ions into the neutralizer. The smallest stellerator with a field of 30 kilogauss and β = 0.1 that would trap most of the neutral beam would be about a meter long and require about 10 amperes of D+ ions. A preliminary mirror machine experiment that might be done using the 1/2-ampere, 100-kev D+ beam from the UCRL spare MTA injector is discussed. A method of starting these machine is discussed."

Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Properties of Portland Cement Mixtures Related to Surface Removal and Decontamination (open access)

Effects of Elevated Temperatures on the Properties of Portland Cement Mixtures Related to Surface Removal and Decontamination

From abstract: The effect of heat on the surface removal of concrete was studied by conducting brush tests on samples which had been subjected to prolonged high temperatures in an oven or in direct contact with an oxy-propane flame. Other methods of heat-treating surface layers of concrete were investigated by direct application of an oxy-aluminum torch on the surface and by the exothermic chemical reactions of pyrotechnic compositions placed directly on the surface.

Theoretical Investigation of Laminar Heat Transfer on Yawed Infinite Cylinders in Supersonic Flow and a Comparison With Experimental Data

Report presenting a theoretical method for calculating heat transfer in the laminar boundary layer on yawed infinite cylinders in compressible flow. The method can be applied to a cylinder of arbitrary cross section and arbitrary chordwise wall-temperature distribution. The variation in local heat transfer around the surface of the cylinder was found to have little functional dependence on yaw angle or wall temperature.
