The Wheat Jointworm and Its Control (open access)

The Wheat Jointworm and Its Control

Revised edition. "The wheat jointworm is a very small grub which lives in stems of wheat, sucking the juices of the plant and causing a swelling in the stem. The egg from which it hatches is laid in the stem by an insect resembling a small black ant with wings. This insect attacks no other kind of plant. The injury which it does to wheat is very distinct from that caused by the Hessian fly, yet the depredations of these two insects are often confused by farmers. This paper is intended, therefore, to give a brief outline of the life history and the nature of the injury to the plant by the jointworm so that any farmer may readily recognize its work and be able to apply the measures of control herein recommended." -- p. 3-4

The Wheat Jointworm and Its Control

Revised edition. "The wheat jointworm is a very small grub which lives in stems of wheat, feeding on the juices of the plant and causing a slight swelling or distortion of the stem above the joint. The egg from which it hatches is laid in the stem by an insect resembling a small black ant with wings. This insect attacks wheat only. The injury which it causes to wheat is very distinct from that caused by the Hessian fly, yet the effects caused by these two insects are often confused by farmers." -- p. 1-2. This bulletin gives a brief outline of the life cycle and the nature of the injury to the plant by the jointworm so that any farmer may readily recognize its work and be able to apply the measures of control herein recommended.

Strawberry Culture in Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia (open access)

Strawberry Culture in Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia

"Strawberries are more widely grown than any other kind of fruit. Centers of large commercial production are found in many different regions throughout the country.... This bulletin discusses the different cultural methods used in different sections and points out those which have been demonstrated by experience to be the most efficient. It is of interest to strawberry growers not only in the State mentioned...but also in other parts of the South and where the conditions are similar to those in the strawberry-growing regions of Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia." -- p. 2. Topics discussed include varieties, soil preparation, fertilizers, training, mulching, and harvesting.

Tobacco Hornworm Insecticide: Recommendations for Use of Powdered Arsenate of Lead in Dark-Tobacco District (open access)

Tobacco Hornworm Insecticide: Recommendations for Use of Powdered Arsenate of Lead in Dark-Tobacco District

"From the time when tobacco was first cultivated in the dark-tobacco regions of Tennessee and Kentucky it has been necessary to combat the hornworms in order to produce profitable crops. For many years the practice of removing them from the plants by hand was followed. Later Paris green came into general use. This bulletin deals with the use of powdered arsenate of lead, which has been found to be preferable to Paris green in many respects. Full directions for its use under varying conditions are given." -- p. 2

The Rough-Headed Corn Stalk-Beetle in the Southern States and Its Control (open access)

The Rough-Headed Corn Stalk-Beetle in the Southern States and Its Control

"Within recent years an increasing number of reports of serious damage to the corn crop by a robust black beetle have been received from most of the Southern States. A noteworthy outbreak occurred during the early summer of 1914 in the tidewater section of Virginia. As very little was known regarding the natural history of this pest, this bulletin has been designed to supply this information. By following the control measures recommended herein it is hoped that the ravages of this pest may be largely overcome in the future." -- p. 3

How Live Stock Is Handled in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky (open access)

How Live Stock Is Handled in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky

"The object of this bulletin is to show how livestock is handled and fits into the farm organization in the bluegrass region of Kentucky. The average successful farm of any long-established type will have various kinds of livestock distributed in about the proportion that owners or operators in general believe will pay best. Thus, a gradual process of selection is going on constantly in all agricultural regions, and it should be to the farmer's interest to know the best practice in his community and to have explained the economic advantages that have been secured by such practice. In this bulletin an effort has been made to bring out the fundamental practices that make for success with livestock in central Kentucky as determined by the practices of the more successful livestock farmers of that region." -- p. 3

Grain Farming in the Corn Belt with Live Stock as a Side Line (open access)

Grain Farming in the Corn Belt with Live Stock as a Side Line

"This bulletin is written to suggest to the corn-belt farmer of the Middle West -- especially the farmer whose soil has been run down by continuous grain farming -- some ways of coordinating and 'cashing in' the scientific advice offered him in hundreds of bulletins already published.... Briefly, these are the conclusions reached by our most successful corn-belt farmer and agricultural experts: To make a money-maker of a farm that has become a losing proposition through steady grain farming you must in addition to raising standard grain crops -- (1) Grow legumes, (2) Raise live stock as a side line, (3) Keep accounts of receipts and expenditures, (4) Mix horse sense with scientific agriculture, (5) Try to secure enough capital to enable you to farm right, (6) Stick to whatever policy you adopt long enough to try it out, and (7) Confer with your County Agent and make a careful study of the bulletins of the United States Department of Agriculture." -- p. 1-3.

Geology of the Big Stone Gap Coal Field of Virginia and Kentucky

From introduction: In presenting this paper the writer has two objects in view. The first is to add to the general knowledge respecting the geology of this central district [Appalachian coal basin]. The groups determined in this region will be carried over the adjoining territory if they can be distinguished and they afford a type-section of the Coal-measures where they are probably best developed. The results are not put forth as final, but as representing the most probable conclusions from the observed facts.

Technique for Estimating Magnitude and Frequency of Floods in Kentucky (open access)

Technique for Estimating Magnitude and Frequency of Floods in Kentucky

Abstract: This report presents flood magnitude and frequency relations applicable to 'unregulated streams in Kentucky. The relations are based on flood data at 117 gaging stations in Kentucky and 14 in adjacent states having 10 or more years of record not significantly affected by man-made changes . Equations that relate flood magnitude and frequency to contributing drainage area in 16 geographic areas may be used to estimate magnitude of future floods with recurrence intervals of as much as 100 years on gaged and ungaged streams having drainage areas of 10 to 4,300 square miles (25 .9, to 11,100 square kilometers) . Estimating equations are also presented in graphical form for the convenience of the user . Additional graphs are presented to estimate flood magnitude for selected recurrence intervals along the Cumberland, Kentucky, and Ohio Rivers .
