He briefly summarizes the life and qualifications of Caviness beginning with the following; "Jimmie Caviness is a veteran of both World War I and World War II. In the last war he served as a Colonel in the 36th Division, and he was a casualty of that war. He lost his only son in World War II."

McMillan advises Carswell that he has attached a clipping along the lines they had discussed and, in a handwritten postscript, conveys his appreciation to Carswell for his efforts in having the phone company run him down on his return to San Antonio. Typewritten on Headquarters Eighth Service Command letterhead. The attached clipping contains an article titled "Specialists Commissions Open in Army."

He apologizes for his mistake and encourages her appraisal of his work as needed, expresses his appreciation for the spirit of her letter and advises that it "but deepens an opinion I've long had of you". In a postscript to Whitehead, Carswell advises that he is working on her 1957 return and that he will forward a rough draft.
