An Analysis and Classificiation of Children's Explanations of Natural Phenomena

The problem of this study was to analyze the answers given by four groups (grade levels) of elementary school children and one group of adults (college freshmen) to direct questions regarding natural phenomena, to classify their explanations, to determine the methods and types of explanations used by these groups when they explain typical natural phenomena, and to compare these findings with the results of other investigators, especially Jean Piaget and Mervin E. Oakes.

The purpose of the study is to determine if significant differences and relationships exist between students who enrolled late and those who enrolled on time at Tarleton State College between the years 1955-1962 inclusive. The study involves comparing the records of 325 freshman and sophomore students who registered late with those of 325 matched freshman and sophomore students who enrolled on time.

An Investigation of the Effects of Deferred Rush and Pledging on a Group of Freshmen at Southern Methodist University

Since the initial experiences of the college freshman were regarded as critical to his personal and social adjustment, the present study had as its primary purpose the investigation of the effects of deferred rush and pledging on a student's first year as Southern Methodist University. More specifically, the study investigated the effects of deferred rush and pledging on the following factors: 1. The effect on academic achievement of a selected group of freshmen. 2. The effect on the drop-out rate of a selected group of freshmen. 3. The effect on the extent to which a selected group of freshmen use the University Health Center. 4. The effect on the extent to which a selected group of freshmen used the Psychological Services of the University.

The Relationship between Teachers' Perception of Administrative Dimensions and the Morale Status of Teachers in Certain Texas Schools

The first purpose of this study was to determine teachers' perception of administrative policies, procedures, and practices in the various administrative units in three Texas school systems and to test the significance of the relationship between the teachers' perception of the dimensions of these aspects of administration and the morale status of the teachers in these various administrative units. The second purpose of this study was to identify those policies, practices, and procedures, as perceived by the teachers, which most frequently are associated with and show a significant relationship to a high morale tendency and those which most frequently are associated with and show a significant relationship to a low morale tendency. The third purpose of this study was to interpret the significant relationships in terms of administrative dimensions and implications which may suggest certain policies, procedures, and practices for the improvement of teacher morale in the public schools.

Sex Differences in the Prediction of Academic Success in High School

The problem of the study is to investigate the effect of sex differences in the use of the California Achievement Tests and the California Test of Mental Maturity in predicting academic success in high school. The specific predictors which are analyzed for sex differences are verbal intelligence quotient from the California Test of Mental Maturity and reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, arithmetic achievement, and language achievement from the California Achievement Tests.

An Investigation of Sturctured Aural, Sturctured Visual, and Unstructured Group Counseling Techniques with Elementary School Children

The purposes of this study were as follows: (1) to ascertain and compare the effect on self-concept, sociometric status including an index of emotional expansiveness, teacher-rated behavior and grades of three group counseling techniques (a structured aural stimulus approach, a structured visual stimulus approach, and an unstructured approach) upon sixth-grade subjects; (2) to compare the subjects involved in these three types of group counseling sessions with subjects in an control group; (3) to compare the differences in effects of the three techniques separately upon girls and upon boys; and (4) to analyze the implications of these findings for elementary school counselors and teachers.

The problem of this study was to determine the relationship between self-concept, expressed sexual knowledge, and attitude toward sex education of a group of experienced elementary teachers. A second dimension of the problem was to investigate the relationship of the three variables above with certain other factors that could possibly influence the effectiveness of the elementary teacher of sex education. These factors were age of the teacher, sex of the teacher ,grade level of teaching, educational level of the teacher, teaching experience, marital status of the teacher, number of siblings of the teacher, and church preference or affiliation of the teacher.

The purposes of this study were threefold: (1) to test the assumption that a curriculum study produces change in a school faculty in conservatism-radicalism, in anxiety, in leadership behavior, and in attitude toward the curriculum study; (2) to investigate the relationships between effects of a curriculum study on conservatism-radicalism, anxiety, leadership behavior, attitude toward the curriculum study and age, sex, and years of teaching experience of the teachers; and (3) to create a model from which replications can be made by Texas Education Service Centers.

One method involved the use of an evaluation form reflecting performance in terms of ability, parent-teacher conferences, and work samples. The other method was comprised primarily of competitive grading and marking procedures, utilizing a standard report card to report results.
